More about Diamond
Sort of off topic, but WTH? Vegetarian dog food? I had to look that up to make sure it really existed.
I was always confused by this too until my dog was diagnosed with a liver infection and possible liver disease recently. The recommended diet for liver disease is protein sources such as plant or egg proteins versus muscle/organ meats. These are apparently easier for the liver to digest and do not produce excessive ammonia during digestion like muscle or organ meats can do. There are quite a few people on the liver disease Yahoo group that I joined that either feed the Vegetarian type foods or prepare their own dog food. I had no idea how complicated the liver is until my dog got sick!

I asked on the Raw feeder thread, but since this seems to have more eyeballs, I’ll repost my question here:

With the Diamond yadda yadda barf yadda Salmonella recently many of the comments around FB have slung to the effect “Well thats why we feed raw.” I literally cannot wrap my mind around this concept because it seems, on the surface, like the most jaw droppingly hypocritical statement I’ve ever read. And it MUST be, and again, no snark here, because I’m ignorant on the subject. I’m not trying to start a war, I just dont. get. it. Because I cannot fathom how a dog kibble with a 4/6 million chance of salmonella is somehow more toxic than RAW meat. RAW chicken. What are the steps taken when preparing a raw diet to eliminate this worry? Why is this not a problem or concern?
Because if you are feeding raw meat, you are probably buying it from a grocery store or other place that sells human grade meat. That meat is highly unlikely to be contaminated. The dog food manufacturers buy from places that do NOT have to maintain the same standards. In fact, some of them buy total CRAP - like sweepings from the meat-packing plant floors.

Today I took my ToTW bag into Petsupermarket where I purchased it. I did not have a receipt and the bag was 3/4 of the way empty. I did have my VIP voucher log. (when you buy 10 bags of food you get the 11th free) this voucher showed when and what was the last bag I bought.

The manager gave me store credit without even asking for the voucher, he was going to give me cash once the computer printed out my receipt, but I needed cat food (not ToTW) so I opted for the store credit.

I received a FULL refund on a nearly empty bag.

I am sure that other stores are doing the same thing.

The recall just got bigger.

I am taking what is left from my taste of the wild back tomorrow but what in the world will I feed???

Solid Gold now added to recall list

May 8 - Solid Gold is now on the recall list:

United States

Pet Food Safety Recall: Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc. (El Cajon, CA) recalls Solid Gold WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food (4-lb, 15-lb and 33-lb packs; Best before December 30, 2012; Batch code starting SGB1201)

and Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food (4-lb, 15-lb and 28.5-lb packs; Best before December 30, 2012; Batch code starting SGL1201), after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonella in Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility. The recalled products were distributed in the United States and Canada from between January and May 2012.

I think someone asked about Solid Gold yesterday (but it wasn’t on the recall list then). It is now though!

Isn’t it amazing how slow these companies are to recall their products. The public needs to know about ALL of the recalled food yet these manufacturers are letting it out a little at a time, some here and some there. They really need to become more responsible and get the information out to their customers as soon as they know it (and they can’t say they didn’t know that their food was manufactured by Diamond in SC for crying out loud.) Diamond began the recalls on April 6th - why has it taken so long for these companies to get this information out to us? And why only one or two a day? And how many more are there that we just don’t know about yet?

I’ve skimmed through most of the thread but didn’t really find an answer to my question. My dog has been eating TOTW pacific stream for about a year and is doing great on it. My state isn’t listed as one that the SC plant distributed but now my store has TOTW back ordered, obviously.

So should I be switching him to something else? I’ve been really happy with the product but is Diamond considered a company with poor standards now? I’m assuming TOTW is going to be back ordered for a long time anyway and he only has half a bag left. It needs to be grain-free with fish protein. He is a healthy shih-tzu with some skin allergies but the grain free/fish diet seems to keep that down to a minimum. I looked at the Acana Pacifica but I don’t think they sell that around here and it looked $$$. What else should I consider?

eta: I will not feed raw

Ok so when I saw the price that was for a large bag. It is more than TOTW but not a huge amount. Acana does have more protein though, 33% vs 25 % for TOTW. Acana has 18% fat and TOTW has 15%. Stupid question but would I just feed less? He only gets 1/4 cup twice a day as it is!

Another one you might like is Earthborn Holistic. We’ve been feeding it to two of our dogs (one is a very picky eater) for over a year and it’s been great. They both love it and have had no digestive issues at all.

They have a couple of grain-free formulas. The fish one is “Coastal Catch”:

check out Earthborn Holistics. I just switched Riley cold turkey with not issues. The formula is similar, cost only a few dollars more ( I am a starving college student so I count every penny) and it has more calories per cup so you can feed less. They have 2 different fish varieties.

Just got back from the pet store and they don’t carry Earthborn Holistic. To make matters worse, I just checked my bag of TOTW and it matches the recall numbers!! What a pain in the ass!

punch in your zip and see where they sell it. I plugged in a dover zip code and gave it a 100 mile radius and a HUGE LONG list of pet food suppliers came up. I my above post about returning tainted bags. I got a full refund.

Thanks! Looks like there are some places close by in PA I can check out tomorrow. Doggy had to settle with a few treats for dinner but he didn’t mind

Someone post a new list please. TIA

nope, wrong. Most all meat sold in our grocery stores carries acceptable levels of crap that is rendered safe only AFTER cooking it PROPERLY. Check the CDC website out. Knew a lady who was International Meat Inspector at USDA in DC. She told me story about Chinese refusing US chicken shipments twice. When I asked why the Chinese were refusing the shipment her reply was that the Chinese have a zero tolerance policy on contamination in the meat…And I was like Um Hello??? Turns out the US accepts certain levels of crap int he meat b/c it is supposed to be cooked properly (right internal temperature) in order to kill off the crap.

anyway does anyone have an updated list of the recall foods? I guess I should check the Diamond site??

I just checked truthaboutpetfood.com and the diamondpetfoodrecall.com and there have not been any new additions. but I just did a quick check.

how about this site? IS the most recent, May 9th

HAHAHAHA! That China would refuse a shipment of chicken from the U.S. based on contamination.

I guess then that they only give a sh*t when it’s coming INSIDE their country and not when it’s going outside.

I switched my dog from TOTW to Nature’s Variety Instinct and he’s doing great on it. I’m using chicken formula, but I’m pretty sure they have a salmon formula also.

Check out Pinnacle’s salmon/sweet potato. Ingredients are fairly similar to TOTW pacific stream, but calories/cup is higher.
