More New Horses: Bert and Ernie

Nothing yet, but it sounds like hers came with a few more breadcrumbs to follow than mine. The coggins mine came with were done at Bowie, so no trail to follow there.

I’ve poked around a bit on the internet, but there are SO many small-time auctions in the areas where DHH are common that they could’ve come through, and very few of them put anything online so there’s not much to look at. I’m hopeful that a DNA search through ADHHA will turn up some results that might allow them to be registered, if they aren’t already, but beyond that - the lack of info is par for the course and I’m OK with that.

One has some peculiarities - MTG gave him blisters and a certain “green” fly spray made him break out in hives - but as far as superficial injuries go, they’ve all been pretty sturdy. Peach of course thought he was going to die over the abscess from hell last year, but who can blame him :joy:

@findeight Ernie’s still totally flummoxed by the treat thing. He’s gotten to the point where he will sometimes TAKE the treat if I shove it in his mouth, but he’s at a loss over what to do after that. Usually he drops it. And I’m using the same alfalfa pellets I feed him, so it’s not like it’s something he doesn’t think tastes good! He just doesn’t know what to do.

We have a wonderful old school horse who is very selective about treats. The trainer thinks he will only take a peppermint “if he feels he deserves one,” which is a charming way of putting it.

It makes it really freaking hard to catch him in the field and fix his blanket, I’ll tell you that…

I wonder if you used the puffy type peppermints and shoved it into his mouth he might like the sweetness enough to give this all some thought?

What about a sugar cube? It might start melting in his mouth before he drops it.

I might have a few of those laying around. Only one of my other critters actually likes peppermints (the horror!!) so I don’t usually keep them outside.

Hellooooooo aunties of COTH, look how dirty I am after last night’s rain

We would never get that dirty

I’m a little sad Ernie has his Uncle Peach & Bert has noone :disappointed_relieved:
Yet?
Maybe he’ll be allowed to become another nephew?

I think Bert may be too confident for uncle Peach, who has historically been the very lowest member of the herd until Ernie. Luckily, there are several other uncles to test out - I did try Bert with Cooper last week, which seemed fine for a few hours until Cooper started terrorizing him for no reason. That leaves Elmo and Fern as options.

Bert, you may go stand back out in the rain until you no longer look like a swamp creature.

Lucky for me, Bert’s a fan of the hose when it’s hot. :joy:

And a glamour mud shot for the Bert fan club. He was mildly concerned by a noise over that way.

Bert says we are friends now. Not like hugs-and-kisses close personal friends, but at least good enough to come search me for cookies and be sprayed off when it’s hot and he’s itchy.

Oh, now that is funny!

Umm… gonna go with Elmo. It’s in the script.

Bert is boasting you can wash off his knees any time while Ernie is sticking with the dirty boo boo rather than allow such nonsense.

I miss my 17 hand boy so much. He was a lovely kind horse I just wish we’d had more years together.

These goobers need to compare notes tonight on what they’ve learned!

It is definitely the most likely pair to work :joy: will try it soon. Part of the issue is that Bert still needs extra calories (he gets lunch) and doesn’t need to share them with his fat friends.

Ernie is firmly established in the water is bad camp with Elmo and Peach. Of course, the older gentlemen stand patiently for required bath times when haltered, but if I come along with the hose over the fence they all book it out of reach :joy: no matter how hot it is or how sweaty they are. No thanks.

Elmo was actually VERY BAD at bath time as a 3 year old. It was a whole production. He’s never liked water, puddles disgust him. Monsters live in there :eyes: rain is bad too.

Omg Bert is giving my mudball a run for his money!

I’m over here giggling and kicking my feet at Bert showing some of his sociable side… or has he just determined the service at this establishment is perhaps up to his standards? Treats and misting sprays and lunch? Sign me up…

Also, Ernie looks nice and clean and shiny :joy: nothing beats a copper chestnut IMO. Though I have red Georgia clay so my guys are more “clay” than “copper” these days :woman_facepalming:t3:

Nothing makes a horse fall in love with baths more than Texas heat :joy:

He’s in there, but it’s buried pretty deep - just starting to come out of his shell now

Confusion at why I have dared to SHOO him back for the incessant picture taking:

Extra confused, why even farther away - but ok?

Ernie decided to try on a little mud for size (just the one side, OK):

I can’t decide which one is my favorite. I’ll see a pic of Ernie and think oh yeah, he’s adorable. But then a pic of Bert comes up and I think, oh wait this one :joy:
