Morgan peeps— help! Am I crazy? YES I AM 🥰

1lb of a ration balancer, plus hay/grass for weight, is actually pretty perfect, if that keeps his weight good. Slightly ribby is totally ok in any horse, but especially a 2-3yo. A light cover of the ribs is also fine. If you’re seeing front ribs, that’s a bit too thin but not horrible, and in a 2yo it might be a growth stage and the same calories might cover those ribs in a month.

Also, depending on the ration balancer, you might be able to feed 2lb a day if he needs a bump in calories. Or, as I really like to do, add a cup or so of alfalfa pellets to keep in the mix, and then you can bump to a couple of pounds without having to wean onto it, when he needs a boost, then you can drop back down when he doesn’t. I really like doing that (or beet pulp) because the extra volume when soaked makes it really easy to mix in most supplements. I just soak it all anyway because I think all horses should be ok eating wet food for a lot of reasons.

Thanks so much @JB! Good to know. The alfalfa pellets are a great idea. :+1:

Oh, he’s just darling!

Of course I’m known around here for going on and on about my Morgan mare, who I retired last year and is now 25. She is a little quirky but despite being a bit too much horse for me back in 2008, she is safe safe safe. Has a huge personality and a complicated brain in a 14.3 1/2 hand package, and back when she would get all puffed up about something, people would think she was close to 16 hands.

We pursued dressage (it got away, mostly my fault) and did a lot of trail riding, mostly solo. In all those years of riding, she only dumped me once.

She’s a lighter boned Morgan but doesn’t come from the lighter and taller lines. I would not want any bigger. She was a harder keeper at first but is now a very easy keeper, so a ration balancer is great for her.

Late to this party but congratulations on your handsome new fella. He is gorgeous and I love the intelligence that shines out of his eyes. Morgans excel at multi-tasking. Trail horse one day, working cows the next and then some dressage…ah, piece of cake.

I love Morgans and would have another in a heartbeat. My mare was Western Working Family with a lot of Flyhawk all over her pedigree. I want another with that breeding or Lippitt.

they are out there, we found a breeder who has produced some really nice foals using the old blood lines

I am just awed at our yearling’s sire Lone Star Longmire who acts much older than his age, He is currently five but here is video of him working cattle at age three

and his foals are just as calm as he

I’m loving the Morgan pics and stories!

I took Petey into the round pen last night and he was a wee bit distracted by lots of goings-on… as he was trotting around I thought “I think he’s actually a Saddlebred” as he was pulling his knees to his eyeballs… this morning, as things were quieter, his attitude was more, “do I HAVE to move?”.

No one ever believes my Morgan mare is 14.2. Nothing prettier than my girl striking a pose, or doing an easy collected trot. Nothing more gratifying than calling her from the stable and hearing the thunder of her gallop before I can see her. She is such a good girl, I couldn’t ask for a better partner.

I don’t know if it’s original or I read it somewhere, but it just popped into my head.

I am often asked by those who see photos of me on my Morgan and even those in person how tall he really is. All are shocked to find out he’s just a hair over 15.2 because he appears much larger until standing next to a taller horse. He just has a personality that’s bigger than himself LOL

I just saw this thread, so am late to the enabling.
So sorry fargaloo for all your sad losses and heartbreak in such a short time.
It looks like you have found just the thing in this cute smart baby to help heal your heart.
Congratulations and best of luck with him.

Thanks @cristalle and to all my enablers! I couldn’t be happier with this sweet guy. Part of me wants to spam this thread with a million pics of his sweet face, but I think I’ll try to stick to a more reasonable schedule of updates

Petey is now in his “big boy” field with a few other geldings, and is settling in nicely. He takes everything in stride! I’ve tried sliding a leg over his back (not sitting on him yet), throwing a saddle pad on him, and he couldn’t care less. Next week we have our farrier out so I’m hoping he shows him what a good boy he is.

I went to watch a friend show this past weekend, and seeing all the baby-horse moments gave me pause – am I really up for this at my age? – but Pete’s sweet and chill nature gives me confidence. We’ll take all the time it takes and enjoy the journey. (Now he just needs to grow and fill out, or I bought myself an expensive dog – he still looks tiny to me!!).

Thanks again for all the support, everyone!

Aww! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:. Well, nothing too exciting to share yet (I wish I’d got a picture of him checking himself out in the arena mirror!) but here he is hanging out and making friends in his new pasture.!
