I was waiting for more ‘current’ Morgan aficionados to answer; but, since this post hasn’t received many responses, I’ll try. Both top and bottom lineage go back to some of the ‘greats’. Heavy on both sides with really nice Brunk and Lippitt lines, several crosses to well thought of foundation stock. In the 4th & 5th generation you have a lot of tightly line bred, very pre-potent individuals. I even see two of my relatives represented, lol, as breeders that is; but you have to go pretty far back. What’s been said about the breed is true.
I and others have had great luck crossing Morgans with Welsh cobs, a true type to type cross. Of course many were bred with driving in mind…my purpose was simply to breed the most versatile amateur friendly types together and I think I produced exactly what was intended. I’ve seen some pretty nice Morgan x Trakehner (sp?) crosses, as well as Morgan x TB crosses (focused on breeding bone to bone - no light frames to avoid surprises) and though I’m not a huge fan of Morabs, I’ve definitely seen some nice ones - just really need to know the dispositions thrown of who you’re breeding (recommended for any cross but particularly true here due to some ‘fad’ crosses of the past).
