Most non slip English girth and half pad?

My haffie mare has a custom made/custom fit to her Black Country saddle that fits like a dream. Unfortunately, she is simply very round, and especially if she is a bit out of shape and we are hacking out, if she has any greenie moments, I still worry about the saddle slipping.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for non slip girths? So far she has hated mohair string girths, and she seems ok with the professionals choice ones, but the original smx one tends to curl at the edges and causes some tension, and the newer thicker ventech ones she seems to like the width and possibly the shape, but the outer material is very stiff and that seems to irritate her after awhile.

I’ve seen some older threads on this topic but the recommended girths don’t seem to be made anymore, so if anyone has any current recommendations for a nice, wide, flexible, non slip girth, I am all ears!

We also have an eco gold pad that I like but on our sweatier days it seems to not stay as non slip, so also interested in any recommendations for non slip half pads!

Also, one last random question if anyone has any opinion: Would a sheepskin girth be able to provide a similar non slip properties as neoprene?

Editing to add: I do ride her with a breast collar for some extra stability :grinning:

I’ve had good luck with both the Bucas Optima girth and the Majyk Equipe one-- both are wide and neoprene lined. I have not found sheepskin to be grippy at all. Have you tried just the basic Nunn Finer nonslip pad under your regular saddlepad? You might also want to add a breastplate when you’re hacking or jumping.

I also find sheepskin more slippery. I’ve had good luck with both an anatomical leather girth (County Logic and Fairfax) or mohair. I particularly like the mohair roper style - https://www.wildwestendurance.com/mohair-girth/

When I had a very round, no wither Arab an Ecogold pad and mohair girth made a huge difference in stability.

For your pad, Ecogold has a few different models. Are you using the Secure one?

I’d also use a 3 point breast plate if I were you.

What has worked best on my pony during her “fluffier” stages is a Professional’s Choice non slip pad underneath the saddle pad, then a Thinline contour pad (no fabric backing) between the saddle pad and the saddle (a thin gel pad would probably also do the trick), and an old fashioned non-elastic girth. (She has finally decided that non-elastic is ok.) My girth of choice is a Cottage Craft style girth, but it’s probably not wide enough for what you’re looking for. Perhaps a wider webbing girth, unless she needs something softer.

Have you tried something that is wide on the sternum like a Mikmar or Stubben EquiSoft?

Professionals choice hands down.

My Very Round Mare has been happy and we have minimal saddle slippage with a synthetic total saddle fit girth and the Acavallo lightweight nonslip pad under her regular pad. The nonslip pad is much stickier when it’s clean so I rinse after every ride. And a breastcollar is a must.

In The Land Of Ponies, where we have many round creatures with no withers, a breast plate is often used to help stabilise the saddle. In extreme cases, a crupper.

The Lemieux double sided no slip pad is a huge help on my wide round connie!

I have a rolly polly too. Since switching to a Total Saddle Fit Shoulder Relief Cinch, I don’t have near the amount of issues, most of the time none at all.

I would seriously explore an anatomical girth, they make neoprene covers that you can take on and off to wash.

Choices for a breastplate that actually helps stabilize?

I find the bridge type ones best for the roly poly types but even a basic 3 point hunting breastplate will help some. There are a to. Of options in different price points out there, too!

Go to Walmart and get the rubbery shelf and drawer liner. Cut to fit under your pad. Super cheap.

For the girth, my favorite non-slip girth is one professionals choice. I have a round pony and that keeps everything in place with my kids hanging and leaning everywhere playing games.

I’d seriously add a crupper and breast plate as well.

I had good results with an endurance style breastplate like this - https://www.promoplace.com/21073/stores/tayloredtack/BREAST_COLLARS.htm

County’s shaped girth, although pricey, seems to work well at stabilizing the saddle. Some of the other anatomic girths might provide the same benefits at a lower price-point, but I’ve had good luck with the County.

For a pad, you might look at the LeMieux non-slip halfpad.

Was going to say the same thing - I have a roll of it on hand for slippery pads (or when I space out and show/laser sheen the whole horse instead of skipping the saddle area…).
