What in your experience is the most-watched Olympic sport and best-known Olympic athlete? Not your personal favorites but the ones most popular in general among your friends and neighbors?
IME the sport would probably be track and field, and the athlete either Usain Bolt or Simone Biles. I will go poll my neighbors and then post again if they prove me wrong.
Swimming or gymnastics. Probably Michael Phelps, although Biles a close second.

I think more people know who Phelps is than Bolt, actually, especially the average American who might not follow the Olympics closely. Most people tend to care the most about athletes from their own country, so this would make sense.
As for sports, I think swimming and gymnastics, then track.
From outside of the USA, I’d say Usain Bolt is the most recognizable and famous! Now Simone Biles name is known outside the gymnasts world but it wasn’t that known before… While gymnastics is I think, one of the most popular Olympic sports, each country has their own gymnastic superstar!
Allyson Felix is amazing. A total of 9 Olympic medals, 6 of them gold medal, 3x world champion, and world record holder.
Neymar would be the most famous sports person competing at the Olympics.
Soccer is the most popular sport that is in the Olympics, but not at the Olympics, because Olympic soccer is confined to players under the age of 23 and the soccer world doesn’t take it very seriously.
