Mounting Block Alternative

Mounting block alternatives to the standard horse blocks. I took this picture to show the difference between three-step dock steps used to get into boats and a horse mounting block. Dock steps are taller, lighter weight and really steady. You can also get taller steps with up to five steps. I ordered mine off Amazon with free shipping.

Good to know they are lighter weight (in the event I ever get to ride again ). Thanks for the visual!

Can I ask cost?
I’ve been using a 3-step aluminum ladder in my indoor & the boat one would be a great (& safer) improvement.
Especially as I continue to age & my knees get crappier

ETA
:open_mouth: The deck stairs I Googled are waaaaaay out of my range :astonished:
Starting at around $800

My friend needed just a bit more height and she got the dock steps. They worked great as I also used them a lot.

i have a three step. my handyman built a four by four foot platform about 8" high and i set the mounting block on that. it works great for my bum hips. i use it for dismounting, too.

I had a 3-step like the black one in your photo. I prefer this kind, which I found sturdier:

I think I might build something like this. Probably not immediately, but at some point. I won’t pay $50 for the plastic rubbermaid steps I usually buy. They only last a year or 2 and break.

The problem is if something says ‘boat’ they jack the price up

I have the 4 step sold for horses. It cost $400. It’s worth it.

The base is wider on the dock step and the steps are taller. It also has anti-slip tread on the steps.

You can get a 4-step dock step that is 42” high and even add a handrail.IMG_1381

I got lucky, there was a set of old concrete porch steps in the back bushes when I bought the farm, now that sucker is stable and non slip ! If you have a tractor with pallet forks may be worth a peek on your local freebie page

I got curious if boat people use mounting blocks because they’re cheaper.

They do!!! :joy::joy::joy:

Yeah, it’s it’s near water they add extra zeros on it
My family was in the yacht sales and repair business. If you ever want to get sticker shock look up random items but put boat in front of it. My favorite is toilets; boat toilet: $700. RV toilet: $150.

One barn had cement mobile-home steps as a mounting block. Not exactly portable, but certainly stable!

Do you know anything about sailboats?

It seems like boats and airplanes are two hobbies that surpass horses in “luxury tax” :joy::joy:

That was almost the whole business. But I personally was a little too young (and then a tween who cared much more about horses than boats) to glean much info. They sold the business 20 years ago. Most of my memories are of playing on the docks and sailing around the PNW; not on how to really operate one.
