We have a filly in training who is constantly getting sores in the corners of her mouth. She’s currently galloping in a copper snaffle or leather mullen but I can see the very beginnings of irritation on the left corner which will lead to bigger and better things on the inside.
Part of the problem is she is incredibly tough to gallop (she’s gone through quite a few riders) which isn’t helping her any. She’s gone in steel bits, the above mentioned copper and leather. I think she galloped in a rubber bit for a time, not sure. She gets Vaseline on her lips before she goes out as well. A hackamore isn’t an option as the track we’re at doesn’t allow galloping in hackamores. Last year when she had this problem she was ponied in the mornings but that created a problem of its own as she kicks herself unless she stays in a straight line and gave herself a hematoma despite the armor we had on her trying to avoid this. She is also very difficult to hold while ponying as well so we were also going through pony riders as well!
Can you tell this filly drives me crazy? She is so tough on herself. Anyone have an ideas on what we could do to help her out?
