Movie: Run Appaloosa Run

Has anybody seen this? Worth watching? Worth buying?

It’s in a flyer of sale movies in the monthly Disney movie club mailing. I’ve never heard of this one. I will assume some Disney aw-shucksness and a happy ending, but I’m not averse to either of those. I do, however, prefer that horse movies actually have a significant amount of horse footage/action.

What says COTH? Good horse movie or bad?

Looked it up on IMDB. Typical old Disney, feel good, kid, dog and horse flick but seems to have plenty of horse action.

I remember watching it when I was young. It culminates in a wild horse race.

I love this movie. Saw it in the theater when it first came out. I don’t know if they used actual footage from the Omak Suicide Race, but it really impressed me when I was a kid.
Lots of horse action!
Do you have to belong to the Disney movie club to buy it?

I remember it from when I was a kid - this was the opening song…

It was about the Omak Suicide Race but I remember the big scene where the girl and her Appy jumped over the chief’s car…

Thanks. I’ll probably give it a try.

Don’t know if it’s on their site generally or not to buy. Might call them and ask.

I believe I read the.Appy jumper was trained by Jimmy Williams.

I’ve always loved it, my mom got it on tape for me. It also had the 101 Trials of Hercules (or something like that) about a team of sheepdogs.

Run Appaloosa, Run would probably be vilified today for featuring the Omak Suicide Race, but I thought it was a fun movie.

I would love to know if the Suicide Race was ever really done like it is in Run, Appaloosa, Run – with a cross-country jumping phase (over straightforward fences, not like xc in eventing) before going down the slope and crossing the river? And in relay teams with one horse for each phase? Does anybody know? It doesn’t seem like the current race has a jumping phase, from what I could gather on the internet and from watching youtube vids.

Also – if you watch youtubes of the Suicide Race, it is over in what feels like seconds, whereas the race footage in the movie (even just considering the hillsides and river crossing, NOT counting the jumping phase I just mentioned) is a couple of minutes.

It is typical Disney schlock – not as good as, say, Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit (which was a theatrical release, I think, not just a Disney TV episode???) – but a lot better than many modern productions like the Flicka from a few years back (shudder).

To me, this one, The Bluegrass Special, and Cristobalito, The Calypso Colt are horse-themed Wonderful World of Disney episodes that are worth watching.

I remember that movie as a kid and loved it then. I’m sure it’s one of the better Disney movies and not the saccharin stuff like new Flicka or Moondance Alexander kind of sap made these days. I recall having dumped my crush on Little Joe Cartwright’s paint to crushing on Apps after seeing it. I’d love to see it again
