I am moving to Pullman, WA in August next year for college. I am starting to look at boarding facilities for my horse now just to be prepared. Does anyone have any recommendations for barns to look at?
I graduated from the area about the time you were born So this info may be outdated.
There is Wonder Stables on the main hwy between Pullman and Moscow. I never boarded there, so I don’t have any good info.
There is another stable on the old Moscow/Pullman road. It has changed names a lot so I have no idea what it is now. It had 3 barns with stalls and an indoor and outdoor. It was an older facility, IIRC, but well maintained when I boarded 3 horses there. I was there for about a year.
I then moved to Paradise Stables in Moscow. Quite a drive, but at the time the facility was brand spanking new and wonderful. Bright barn with at least 40 stalls and a very large, well lit indoor with excellent footing. Outdoor arena was clay and mostly not usable due to the weather and the characteristics of clay. Indoor wash rack. Trails and large pastures.
I know there is a barn in Moscow that used to cater to Pony Club (Breezeway??) and also a privately owned facility that boarded horses south of Pullman (The Druffel family??) but I"m not sure on their status.
Boarding in Pullman is hard. What are your top needs? Turnout and good arena footing are hard to find. The higher quality barns are usually full, especially in the fall when students come and bring new horses. It seems like some of the horses go elsewhere after the first semester! Are you trying to keep eventing? If so, are you more DIY or do you want an involved trainer? Jump vs dressage?
there are some older threads about Pullman that you can search and mostly they are still accurate although some ownership has changed.
In regards to above, Breezeway is actually in Pullman, south of town out 195. Wonder has a new owner in the past few years. She events and has a lesson program. A lot of the places that are in/near town have limited or owner managed turnout. Maybe the above poster was thinking of Sunshine Stables between Moscow and Pullman? Flying B is also out that way.
If you go further out (will you have a car?) there are more options for pasture board etc but then you may not have an arena or at least not an indoor. In my opinion you need an indoor to keep working through the winter. Once you have specs that would help narrow things down. PM me if you want.
WSU has an IHSA team - you may want to look them up on Facebook and try to connect with some of the members. Even if you don’t plan to ride IHSA, they should have some info on the local boarding options.
