Moving to Germany

I’m moving to Kaiserslautern, Germany next month and will be looking to board my horse. Any recommendations on boarding and/or training? I plan bringing my horse over a month or two after I settle in, so I’ll have time to explore (provided COVID allows), but would love some ideas on where to start. Thanks!

Many years ago I was an exchange student and lived in Kaiserslautern for a year. I rode at Reiterverein Barbarossa which is located on the hill just below the soccer stadium. There are other options too a bit further out but the nice thing about this place was we were adjacent to amazing trails that took you through some beautiful parts of the Pfälzerwald. Viel Spaß in K-Town!

Well I’m feeling old - just googled Reiterverein Barbarossa and learned that it was amalgamated with another club in 2007 and is no longer in that old located. Here’s the website for the new club:

I rode over there when I was very young :). The barn I rode at is now closed.

I found this thread, though: https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/f…autern-germany

Thank you!

I was stationed at Ramstein AB many years ago. It seemed like every town had a riding club, so the best thing would be to communicate with someone who is already there to get some ideas. I started out at a club in Rodenbach and it moved to to Lanstuhl. I lived in Kindsbach and really enjoyed riding in Germany, going to horse shows and auctions.

I live in the area. Feel free to PM me with more specifics on what you’re looking for and I’ll gladly make some recommendations.

Reitanlage Fröhnerhof is one of the larger stables by Kaiserslautern and is very nice! As is Berghof in Rodenbach. My stable is a bit further out, but it also depends on where you plan on living.

How expensive is the cost of living in Germany compared to the US? I’m mainly just curious. I know someone who lived and worked in Germany for a while and they loved it there.

It depends on where you live in US, but it is about the same. Here is a chart I found on the internet: https://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/compare/Germany/United-States/Cost-of-living. Some costs are much higher, like the price of gasoline, but they have a better mass transit system. As far as horses and riding, lessons are much cheaper, shows much cheaper, but the farrier, wow when I got my first bill I thought it was for several horses! This was years ago so things may have changed.

I graduated from HS at KTown !! I rode at a little place in a village near the village I lived in off base. I would bet he may not be there anymore as it was the late 80’s. I also travelled by train (alone) once a month to Bitburg (where we also were stationed) and ride/stayed at Hungerburg in Stahl. It is still open but is an hour or a little more from KTown so that isn’t realistic for you. Have fun it’s a great place to live and travel from!!!

Thanks for posting the website! It’s interesting.

Very out of date, and needs a fact checker.
