Moving to Louisville Kentucky!

I am posting this in off course as I’m willing to look at other barns outside of strictly hunter jumpers. We are moving from Atlanta to Louisville this week and I’m eager to find a barn to board at. Also looking for a working student position in case anyone knows of anything. Does anyone have any experience with barns in this area? We haven’t picked housing yet and I’d like to keep the new commute to the barn much shorter than I do here in Atlanta. Looking for 30 minutes or less. My price range is fairly low and I’m happy to do pasture board as that is what my guy has now. I’ve found about four barns in the area that look promising. Hoping to get some info on them. I’d like to start bringing my guy to some local schooling shows and possibly A shows in the future. He’s nothing fancy but I’d like to get him back to where he was a few years ago. I am low maintenance but would love an indoor for the winter.Good instruction is my highest priority. The prices for board look much cheaper in Louisville than they are in Alpharetta.

Does anyone also know what it’s like to live there? We’ve been looking at houses to rent and haven’t found anything really updated and a lot of the places we’ve seen online look a little sketchy? Thanks for any info.

No info from me but I am sooooo jealous!!!

You may want to let us know where you will be working in order to suggest housing.
The commute in Louisville can be a total PITA.

From there you’d want to decide on a barn.

I am excited too, but am completely ignorant on what it’s like to live there! I’ve been to Lexington as a groom and am in love with the beautiful green country side.

I live about 30 minutes east of Louisville and commute everyday…the drive isn’t that bad, timing is everything! Feel free to PM me specific questions…I’ve lived here my whole life and love it

West Main Street, smack dab by the river.

It would be hard to answer questions about boarding and distance wise with not really knowing where you’re looking to live. Louisville is a very large city.

I am assuming you will be working “Downtown”.

Well, you do not want to live anywhere in the West End.

Working downtown also gives you the option to live across the river in Indiana. A lot of my friends do just that because it’s cheaper and you can find a place with land within a reasonable drive time.

Other than that you about are as far away from the outskirts of Louisville as you can get, LOL.

When we used to live in St Matthews we kept our pony on the basement. it was a drive in basement so we could walk pony in and out without a problem.

We did have to explain to the animal control when they came knocking on the door that that yes we had a horse in the basement. They inspected everything, check zoning codes and we passed. They actually complemented us on the arrangement.

[SUP]I’ve lived in Louisville my whole life (43 years) involved with horses for most of it.

PM me your list of barns and I’ll tell you the ones to avoid.

Most reputable barns are in the Prospect area in Oldham County. Look for homes in that area too. [/SUP]

BigMick I pm-ed you!

Shelby county also has a lot of nice farmettes. Also some boarding places too. But Prospect Us-42 corridor is probably you best bet for close to downtown.

There is a dressage trainer with openings at a barn on 42. Sunny Acres if I recall correctly.

Problem with coming into downtown from Oldham County (I-71) is that for the next few years it’ll be a mess during rush hour due to major constructions everywhere.
Not unusual to hear on the radio that there is a 45 minute delay for the last stretch into downtown. That’s only like 3 miles or so?

I PM’ed you back!

I commute every day into downtown on I-71 from the East End (access 71 from Gene Snyder). I leave the house around 7:25 and get to work a little after 8:00. Timing is everything. Leave any later, you’ll sit awhile.
