Mud boots!

Hi all, after two years of refining my mud scratches prevention plan for the super sensitive TB at my place, I finally have a good protocol and some reviews to share on two different types of mud boots.

So the TB wears mud boots anytime the grass is wet because even dew is a problem for her. I take the boots off once the grass is dry to let her legs air out. If she has mud scabs on her legs, I brush on some Fiske’s hoof and hide balm. Before putting the boots back on in the evening, I shake some Keratex drying powder onto each leg.

I first bought the Woof Wear mud boots. They worked very well but due to their loose fit, they rubbed in the space under the fetlock - causing hair loss and skin irritation. This was a problem on the back legs only. But because the boots are loose fitting, I frequently left them on for a week at a time if it was raining all week or I was away.

After two years, the woof wear boots are staring to wear out. I replaced two of the boots with Premier Equine mud boots. These boots have a tighter fit, more like a support boot. With the tighter fit, they don’t rub. But I am less confident about leaving them on for long periods, so I have been taking them off at least every couple of days.

I am so glad to finally have a good system in place to prevent the painful infections she previously got from mud scratches.

Thank you for this! Dealing with scratches now and will do ANYTHING to not do so again.
