Mud.Mud.Mud

Just a vent. I am sick of mud. My 19 yo boy is now on no-mud protocol due to his current episode of thrush (this isn’t the first time-seems like a different foot every time. He has a lot of foot hardware such as pads and bar shoes which makes things difficult). Despite foot picking and stall cleaning and religious farrier schedules, just being out in the blasted stuff is a problem. The farrier removed a good part of his frog to clean it out and we’re treating aggressively. Sigh. He’s not a good sport about no outdoor turnout. He’ll be in the indoor turnout rotation but, heck, Mother Nature please give us a break!!!

May I join the chorus?
I was actually happy last night’s precip was snow, not rain.
Takes longer to become mud.

Neighbor is doing me a Solid by bringing his tractor w/blade to scrape down the Muck Mountain in back of my stalls.
He tried about 3wks ago & it was too frozen to move more than the top inch (of probably 6 :persevere:) & up until last night things had dried up enough to be scrapeable & ground would support the tractor.
Today?
Nope-ity, Nope, Nope!

I find that Artimud tends to help! Since it’s a clay consistency it really sticks in their hoof and it lasts a couple days for me

Oh man that is terrible. Mud is bad here but no thrush thankfully. But it did rain again so mud is an 1” deeper.

Thrush is the worst, hopefully staying out the mud helps gets the healing.

I was just complaining about the mud to my friend and fellow horse property owner today. I know spring is always awful and it feels like the mud will never end, but it still gets to me every year. I think it was made worse by the fact that we just had a lovely and unseasonably warm February, and now March feels like it’s trying to make up for that by being wet and cold and dreary most days. I wouldn’t even mind the rain that much if we got some nice sunny days in between, but it’s been cold and rainy all week with forecast for next week looking the same. Hoping daylight savings time this weekend will make me feel a bit better with more daylight hours after work.

How funny. I was so happy we got rain instead of snow

Snow melt makes for ultra soft, squishy ground. Rained on ground ( even a couple of inches) has way more run off so dries out faster! Must be where you live that makes the difference.

Yup
Clay soil here.
So rain doesn’t perc as quickly, stays on top making bootsucking mud :persevere:
Snow staying around means it’s cold enough so ground is harder beneath.

The fields drive me insane. I will step in 6 inch mud puddles while trying to get my horse out of the field- and get this- he walks away, dragging me to step in more mud. I had to wear overalls and tall muck boots when I go in there. Since my parents own the stable, I’m begging, BEGGING them to let the grass regrow. It’s not really working, since we’re still putting hay out in the field
