Multiple Sclerosis horses and riding?

Just wondered what experiences people have had with Multiple Sclerosis, owning, caring for and riding their horses.

Can you still do it? When did you have to stop? What do you do that helps?

Hi there,

There is a thread here from 2009 on this topic:-

I have a friend with this disease and has been riding (on & off with it )for past 4 years. She has good days and bad…I understand everyone’s MS is different…I passed this thread on to her.and she found it helpful.

Riding is her passion and I think it is what keeps her going…but she takes very good care of herself, resting every afternoon…etc. I think she rides an average of 3 times a week but also putters daily in her barn.

I just did a quick search. Most websites recommend Omega 3. This is the one I take:

See you at the inspection.

Thanks Dan for the health tip and for helping at the inspection. see you there!

I have a few friends with MS and they took up driving when they could no longer ride without fear off falling off from a little spook. But they still do all their own horse care themselves.

Heat seems to be the biggest issue with horses. So learn to keep cool and figure out what works best for you, ride early mornings or evenings when cooler.

Not only do I have MS, but also Addision’s Disease (my adrenals don’t work), Hashimoto’s and other related conditions. I have to constantly balance my meds to function, and it’s impossible to decipher which symptoms are from which disease. That being said, I’m 50 years old, take care of my five horses myself, take my daughter to shows and have started showing my 5 yr. old QH beastie in dressage and starter CTs. I never know what each day will bring, but I’m deterimined to get as much in for as long as I can. My best wishes to you…
