muscle builders

Has anyone fed a horse a muscle building supplement that has made a difference? My four year old has little muscle behind and no impulsion…I was thinking maybe to boost his muscle mass would atleast give him more to work with.

i have used Body Builder on and off and know a lot of other people who have too. I honestly cant tell if its made much of a difference. yes, my horse did build muscle, but that may have had more to do with her training than the supplement. The main ingedient in body builder is gamma orazynol, which is a component of rice bran oil. so… if your horse will eat it, you might want to try the rice bran oil first. it would be a lot less expensive.

check out products from Uckele’s in Blissfield MI… They have wonderful products that can be tailored to meet your horses needs… Just call:)… I use EquiOmega for my horse… He is a five yr old and was not developing muscle and keeping weight on. This product has worked very well. BTW…not affiliated with the co…:)…just love the products;)

I am in AWE of the difference Uckele’s TriAmino has made on my Westfalen mare. I started by trying their MassBuilder, which “bulked” her up fast, but did not make a difference in her way of going, just her “look.” The TriAmino has dramatically improved her ability to build muscle and muscle endurance. She was strong, but tired very, very quickly, and was slow to recover. We still have work to do, but the TriAmino has made a DRAMATIC difference. And you feed a very small amount per day, which is great; she’s also a pretty picky eater and she’s never turned her nose up at it.

God damn it, Lauren, you just made me buy another supplement.

I don’t remember if Body Builder is the one I used about 8 years ago on a relatively quiet Arab/Paint cross gelding. Might have been More Muscle, but it definitely had gamma oryzanol in it. He was 4 and scrawny, and a clinician recommended putting him on a muscle-building supplement. He was on it for about 6 months, and he definitely filled out very nicely. I also was regularly schooling him in dressage, so it’s hard to say how much was due to training vs. age vs. the supplement. My impression was that the supplement worked. He never lost the muscle after coming off the supplement. HOWEVER - during those 6 months, he was loony tunes! For him, at least. He was noticeably spookier, and when I lunged him he would just turn inside out sometimes, and actually got away from me a couple of times. It was not like him to do that. After he stopped getting the supplement, he was back to his reliable self.

Personally, I will not use a gamma oryzanol supplement again, because of the behavior change in him.

I only recommend the ones that I KNOW work!

Correct work will build muscle. If the horse is not fit for the work he is doing there is a much higher likelihood of injury. Bring him slowly and steadily and the muscle will come. At four he is still growing as well. he needs that energy to grow, as growing slows his body will develop mass.

i thought gamma oryzanol can help to calm a horse? Body builder from equiade (dot com) claims that it reduces nervousness and stress.

I have been thinking of adding some gamma o. to my horses diet, he has never had good muscle tone, and you can only ride and lunge so much every day.

From what I can tell, gamma O makes the body spike growth hormones that can add bulk to muscles. Also can be good for ulcery horses.

there was a study in au as well on 40 race horses :

so, if you are going to use it, try for 1200mg or a HIGH quality rice bran oil.

the Springtime version of Gamma oryzanol worked wonders for my guy after being off work for a year…No hotness or silliness (that he didn’t already have!)

I really like the Progressive Nutrition Topline Enhance. It’s a fairly new product.

Cyriz has always been on the lean, “racehorse build” side, regardless of his feed program or work load. And of course, worse during breeding season.

He’s been on the Topline Enhance for 6-8 months. Of course, he’s also been in full training and getting great training. But, he has gained about 400 lbs of muscle in the last year…mainly the topline, hindquarter and neck. (he lost some of it during breeding season, and most of the gain has been since Aug).

He is a different horse. And looks incredible!!

I agree. Four year olds are not yet mature. I won’t rush physical growth.

Top Line Extreme has helped my lean OTTB regain condition after a bout with a liver issue left him scrawny and with no top line. Yes, work and nutrition have helped too but this animal now looks like a WB. The difference is astounding.

Not a fan of those products as I saw someone cripple and have to euthenize a beautiful horse feeding it Grow Colt. This WAS years ago and it WAS a yearling. Its’ bone grew faster than the tendons could handle… heartbreaking! I know there must be improvements to these products by now but that was enough for me to decide to just rely on stratigic training programs and good old nutrition to promote muscle developement.
