what is the water consumption - in arid Cali?

I find that almost all replacement products are not honest on the environmental impact.

I’m allergic to certain fungi so I won’t be partaking in purchasing anything made from mushroom leather

i know that here, in august and september, which can be weeks without rain, a variety of fungi are abundant. Including hen-of-the-woods/chicken-of-the-woods and king boletes (porcini), sultan’s caps and giant puffballs all delectable edibles.

And gosh, there are plenty of other places to have mushroom farms that are not arid. StartUp in California because it’s just that for some reason, california seems to grow innovation better of any state.

Not really the point. Large scale production uses energy and resources like water.
While I do see the issue with some natural materials, some products do not make sense on the environmental scale, only on the ‘ethical’ one


Maybe for intergalactic colonialization? So far, leather is a side product.

Not all are repeatedly edible.
I knew a lady once, she was a chemist and scared the poop out of people who met her in fall, collecting poisonous mushrooms. They feared for her husband!

I would guess it would be like teflon: the elements are highly toxic, but chained into macro sequences they don’t immediately kill you

I suspect the technology is being developed in California, but when they need to scale up, production would likely happen where it makes the most sense (e.g., another state). Or they would do it indoors, where evaporation could be better controlled (thus needing a lot less water than outdoor agriculture).

Edit: I’m just responding to your comment about the water consumption and “arid California,” not the issue of sustainability in general. I don’t know mushroom farming at scale well enough to comment on how sustainable it is versus cattle.

but indoor production also eats up resources.
I am sure it has a use (vs petroleum-based products)
I am just always a little skeptic about the hailed sustainability, just because no animals were actively involved in the process

Oh never mind.
Just kill a few Chinese Uyghur people in the process, and burn up all sorts of things transporting stuff there and back. Not to mention getting rid of pollutants in Chinese rivers.
