My DIY round bale solution

I was trying to devise something that limited the horses ability to kill themselves (no wood or nails). This is the Hay Trap. The horses generally drop any excess hay into it, and we’re saving 25% on hay this year. You could add a bale net to save more. It’s made out of 21 heavy duty plastic pallets 37” square. I put nine on the bottom, to keep the hay off of the ground. Three on each side, with the small holes facing the horses. It’s bound together by heavy duty zip ties and rope. One side has the pallets not attached to the bottom, and is set up to open for loading. A piece of schedule 40 pvc holds it closed.

That’s brilliant. And much safer than many alternatives as well as easy to move.
where would one procure those types of pallets?

I went on FB Marketplace. I can’t tell you the number of awesome buys that I have gotten there. In this case, I just did a search for plastic pallets. I found a guy who was willing to deliver for a bit more $$. In the Spring, we pull it up, and use a machine to clean uo around it.

The prototype was smaller- just four pallets for a base. It was not large enough for the horses/donkey to drop excess hay as they ate. This one is. By the way, all in this cost me under $200. YMMV

If you’re anywhere near the Chicagoland area, I can get you a bunch for free.
