My dog rolls in poo...

On Fridays, my dog (a 2.5yr old boxer/pittie/blackmouthcur cross neutered male) stays at my friends house while I work. She has a giant Great Dane (165lbs) that Riley loves and they play really well together. Lulu the Dane gets fed an organic raw diet of mostly beef and chicken. Riley is allergic to chicken…this will make sense in a second.

Lulu’s owner has a privacy fenced in yard that she let’s the dogs go into when she is busy in the house, and that is when Riley strikes!

After Lulu has a poo he will roll in it. And not just kinda roll in it…I am talking drop his shoulder rubs his face, is collar, whole upper body in her steaming pile. :disgust:

Its so gross!

He has done this twice; once last week and then again today. He has now broken out in hives (started last time) due to contact allergy and he has received 2 baths in two weeks and I just gave him his advantage flea treatment !!!

I know there is really nothing that can be done except my friend needs to keep a better eye on him and he can’t go outside unsupervised;).

So are there any other poo rollers out there? Let’s laugh about it together, because, honestly…its kinda funny in a poo kind of way.

It’s pretty common for dogs to roll in unsavory smelling poo like stuff. I believe the behavior comes from their early ancestors rolling in nasty smelling things to mask their own scent while they were out hunting prey.

I had a German Shorthair who would roll in fresh cow poop at any opportunity. The little cottage I lived in on a horse farm also was quite close to a field of young dairy heifers. It only took nanoseconds for Rivet to streak over to the field and drop in the first cow pie he came to. He also loved to roll in deer poop and dead animals. One of my Beagle girls will also try to roll in any dead carcass she finds when we are out rabbit hunting. Just delightful…blech!

yep, yuck. Dogs are just so charming. Add the rolling in disgusting stuff to the list of distgusting stuff they eat. Like munching on horse turds, dead deer pieces, dead birds, etc. Ah its a dogs life.

Sometimes dogs like to remind us of what they really are LOL

One of my two dogs is big on rolling in anything smelly…yuck!

Since your dog has an allergy and it’s not just a stinky issue, but a health issue, would your friend be willing to change the routine a little? Maybe take the Dane out to poop on a leash/in her presence so she can pick it up before your dog gets into it? Most dogs seem to have a routine where they poop at certain times of day (one of mine poops “on command” if she has any to do), so it shouldn’t be too much of a burden.

How prophetic! I just had a dog roll in a fresh-outta-the-oven pile of steamers yesterday!

In 14* weather! (Trying to warm up?)

And I had to load him into my Suburban along with 11 other dogs!

Who then acquired Poo-by-Proxy!

And while I was in his kitchen trying to clean him up with paper towels, PooDog licked my face and smiled at me, revealing poo-embedded teeth!!

After 30 years of this, I’m convinced that I have the world’s strongest immune system.

Ahhh yes one of my dogs loves to roll in stuff. I was going to say at least it’s better than poop eaters because we have some of those and it’s so hard to break that behavior… but then i read that your dog is rolling in steaming piles… that’s a whole different mess of trouble right there! Gross!! Thank goodness my roller at least finds… dried things.
We did have one memorable morning here after we had first moved to the farm. I checked on the dogs in the backyard to find they had been digging up the septic tank. Septic mud masks covering muzzles, heads ears to toes, bellies. Revolting. So I threw them into the front yard and started bathing them one by one… only to look out the front window and see them taking turns rolling with unadulterated merriment in… something. Picture three dogs covered in the foulest crap (quite literally) rocking back on their haunches and diving into the ground, and flopping so hard they were getting air time between wiggles. Rushed outside and found they had discovered a dead fish, dropped by a bird for the benefit of our dogs. At that point they could have gone onto a third course for all the difference it would make in smell!
There was also the time when the turkey vulture electrocuted itself on our power line and was wedged on the pole with the power box. Power company refused to service it because they couldn’t get their truck to that pole. So we got to wait for the bird to fall out of the sky. But don’t worry, the dogs that found it were more than happy to distribute it around the yard. I’ll never forget looking out the bathroom window and seeing that, yes, vulture drop day just happened, and one of our foster dogs found a wing. He was bounding through the yard, tail held high, vision completely obscured by the three foot wing that was opening to its fullest extent, and smacking him in the head with every stride. Three dogs followed behind him in a veritable parade of glee.

Not dog poop, but dead things if they’re available and/or groundhog poop. Not so much now that we’re not out on the big farm, but I wouldn’t put it past 'em if the opportunity arose.

The allergy thing just adds insult to injury, eh? I wish I had a solution for you that wouldn’t be a total PITA, but other than keeping him home or keeping him on a leash until poop can be picked up, I’m not sure what the other options would be.

Good luck!

Lovey and Bits,

Those stories are great! Lovey you had me laughing!!

Canaqua, she is going to watch him more carefully. Lulu’s owners has learned the hard way on what his ‘tells’ are that he is going to go poo diving.

He loves to go over and play with Lulu and her owner has now vowed to let him outside under a watchful eye since she is the one that has to bathe him :lol:!

Its either that or he stays at home for hours.

The last time Lance rolled in poo, he really went to town. Ground that mess aallll the way in. He even had it in his ears. I’m sure it was because he’d had a bath within the last week. Well, I had to tell him he was getting another bath. Sorry, bud, but you live in my house and lounge on my bed.

The whole time I was bathing him he looked at me like, "Awww, Mom, I worked really hard at that! Can’t I just enjoy being ripe for a few hours??
