Well…around here, I see younger kids out fox hunting jumping pretty scary crap…but on saints of hunt ponies/horses. I don’t have an issue so much with a younger kid jumping bigger fences…but in the hunt field on a made hunter is quite a bit different then jumping a technical xc course on your own.
My issue is much more with the mind set that the kid is “training” a young horse. And that such young green horse was bought for the kid to move up on…That piece of it raises red flags of a trainer fleecing some parents. Who knows if it is true or not…but that just causes me to raise and eyebrow and be suspicious. Of course a trainer can also fleece parents by talking them into buying an inappropriate horse who is not young and green. And there are some 4 year olds who are just so easy that they shock you they are 4.
And as to a 9 year old going training level. I personally would not allow it…but would look to challenge them more in other ways. You do not need to go eventing to build skills…and I’d rather see them skill building over fences that fall down or with their dressage or doing other things like chasing cows or out fox hunting…let them wait a bit before getting so focused on eventing competitions. And honestly…they are kids…I’d rather NOT see the focus on competing at all.
