My Horses My Teachers by Alois Podhajsky

So, anyone read this book? I read it years ago and came across it a few weeks ago when cleaning out some bookshelves. As it had been awhile, I decided to read it again. I have been enjoying it so much that I decided to pick up a copy for a friend of mine. WOW. I went on amazon and the book, now out of print, is about $100 for a decent copy. Here I have been dragging this book all around with me in my purse, dog earring the pages, tossing it in the back of my car. I had no idea it was so expensive to replace. I still have the price tag on the book, I got it for $17.95.

Anyway, if you happen to own a copy, take care…they are quite expensive.

It really is a great read.

Yes, LOVE It! But for $100… I may be willing to part with it since its already read LOL… check ebay though.

I was just going to get a copy for a friend. Couldn’t believe how much they cost. There is one for $45 but it is not in good shape, then the price jumps to around $95. Suddenly I pulled my copy out of my purse and unfolded the dogearred pages. I guess I will take better care of the copy I have.

I love that book, you can read it over and over and keep learning.

I have that book - but now I come to look for it it has GONE. It was probably lent to someone…memo to never lend my fave books.

It is one of my absolute favorites. He is quite humble, IMO, in admitting to the challenges his horses presented.

Whenever I have lost motivation, I re-read. I’m usually really fired up after.

I also want a copy…Amazon keeps sending me notices that they’re still ‘trying to find it’ for me…

Absolutely love it. He so obviously appreciated and respected each horse’s individuality. I just had mine out the other day. It’s in quite good shape.

And no, it’s not for sale.

A very, very good book, I’ve read it twice. . . so far.
Thanks for the heads up on it’s current value.

I was able to get a copy as a present for a friend from Borders last fall.

I just checked Borders web site:

The paperback is available (but on back order) for $17.95.

I have it and LOVE it!

I bought mine in great (nearly new) shape on Amazon or ebay (I forget which) for about $40 I think. I’ll probably end up reading it many times. It’s absolutely WONDERFUL and well worth the purchase!!!

many many for sale under 100

This is the most inspirational book I have ever read about horses and riders. I got my copy from the library at the high school where I teach. No one in the inner-city school had checked it out for two decades. The librarian gave it to me when she pulled her ‘discards’ off the shelves. I have read it over and over. It reminds us that dressage makes every horse more beautiful.

Please, please, please let it come back into print so I can give it as a gift.

THeHorseProblem you can buy it for 10 - check out the links i posted above.

I see that, thanks, mbm. I tried to buy it new for a friend a few years ago and have it shipped direct to her. Now I know where to get it. Maybe I should buy a few used copies to have on hand.

I don’t understand why this book sells in the US for $58.55 from one seller and another is selling the same edition for $1,185.99. Also, the two new books are not as expensive.

Book prices are goofy.

I read the book ages ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Karl Mikolka loved to tell stories about Podhajsky. He may have written humble, but Mikolka portrays him as a passionate, stormy fellow of strong opinions. Gee! Sounds like a horse person!

I agree with al the opinions stated here. I actually had the the chance to ride one of the horses profiled in the book,Forty Winks. Even as an older horse he had still had many of the traits mentioned in the book. His favorite reward at the end of a session was to go across the diagonal on a loose rein doing one time changes.

I bought a soft covered copy a few years ago for a gift and I’m sure it was only about 14 bucks. I’ll see if I can find out where I got it.

Someone needs to check the copywrite on the book. If it’s no longer viable, then they could put it up on the Guttenberg Project–and we could all get it for FREE!
