I just purchased an unraced 4 year old thoroughbred rescue mare from Kentucky for a steal of a price about 2 weeks ago. I plan on training her in dressage for a while to build her topline and to give her a good foundation for whatever discipline I decide to steer her towards (excuse the pun). For the price they were asking, I obviously wasn’t expecting a top-of-the-line show prospect. The most important thing to me is that she is happy and comfortable in her forever home. Sonnet was one of 24 horses that were rescued from a neglect/abuse case. She surprisingly has a wonderful disposition and doesn’t spook at much. I am attaching a link to Facebook of some conformation pictures I attempted to take (she is still a wiggly 4 year old), so if anyone would like to give me input on her conformation it would be much appreciated!! Yes, I am aware that she is over at the knee. I would LIKE to eventually be able to jump her, but I understand the conformation of her legs may limit her abilities.
Critique away!!!
She’s cute! A little downhill in the pic, but at 4 is still growing. I wouldn’t worry much about being over at the knee. Some jumpers actually prefer that. I had one that was MUCH worse than your mare and he’s out eventing. Best of luck with her!
Over at the knee is usually a result of check ligament strain, not always congenital…
However I thought she was more back at the knee and calf kneed than over at the knee… maybe it’s the picture. She does have some filling (or looks like it) up front, what’s going on?
I like her loin connection, and her bum - could do with a little more of an angle to her hocks (I like to see a more dramatic openness from stifle to hock, I believe it makes for a more “foldable” and flexible jumper and mover) but she is cute.
Love the big ears! She does appear more back at the knee (rather than over) in these pics. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bTvsoNRXLuE/Td1_Zh3NzoI/AAAAAAAAAEw/afHgbZuLvo8/s1600/Knee+image.jpg
I had an OTTB mare that was over at the knee - more severely than your mare. She was very sound competing through Prelim eventing and 4’ jumpers. I ultimately lost her to colic at age 12 But sound as a bell until then.
cutie! i think her over-at-the-knee isnt bad at all. i had a heavy TB who was very over at the knee, but it didn’t negatively affect his way of going or jumping whatsoever. I would actually pay closer attention to her slightly roached back. she is very short coupled with a small hindquarter, but that roach in her back may worsen and cause hind end issues if you aren’t schooling lots of long low work asking her to lift over her back, especially in the early stages of her training, up to learning collection.
