After posting her arrival on our FB page, several people shared that this recently happened to them as well. We bred our older mare late in the season as a last ditch effort to settle her in foal. When we were told she was open, my husband and I decided at 18 that maybe she would just retire to life as the “Auntie” mare on the farm to everyone else’s foals.
Imagine my surprise at the end of June when suddenly my mare literally tripled in size and developed a bag. I scrambled to get the nursery paddock and foaling stall ready. Then on the 4th of July, she graced us with the most beautiful filly. I am still a little in shock to be honest and after beating my self up for not knowing, not taking her off the fescue and all the other precautions the pregnant broodies get, I feel very blessed to have a healthy baby on the ground.
How many have been told your mare in not pregnant only to be surprised the following year?
So without further ado…
Here is Rhythm & Balous by Bliss MF out of our mare Ms. Ritmo Latino.
Ritmo means Rhythm in Spanish and Bliss MF is by Balou du Rouet.

I always enjoy your naming!!
What a fun surprise to brighten up your summer.
What a gift!!! Lovely!!!
That filly is stunning! Congratulations on the surprise foal. I have never had that happen to me before, thankfully!
Very CUTE! Mom looks happy too…
I’ve had it happen TWICE with two different vets. In one case, it was a very fertile mare, so I wasn’t really surprised when she started looking preggers. In the 2nd case, it was a harder to breed mare who was a fatty anyways - so she got really fat in the Spring on pasture, and I think she was about 10 months along before I asked the vet to check her since she wasn’t coming into season. Surprise! Those are great surprises, aren’t they
Beautiful filly - great name!! Congratulations!!
NICE baby!
Thank you everyone. We could not be more pleased! In fact we confirmed two of our other mares in foal to Bliss MF for 2015. Very excited! Here is another pic from this morning of her.
Lovely foal! Wonderful name!!!
I saw pics of your foal on FB and excitedly showed my daughters as we bred our Hanoverian mare to Bliss for a 2015 foal. Your filly is gorgeous! Congratulations!
What an awesome surprise!
I have always hoped the vets are wrong when they say no baby, but alas, in that case, they are spot on.
Congrats!! I always love a “good” surprise!!
