Lately my tailbone has been giving me awful trouble… Yes my butt hurts. I think it’s do to my horse moving exceptionally well lately but I’d like some advice as I’m sure this can’t be a unique problem. Maybe a shock absorbing half pad or something?
The basic ThinLine is excellent for this sort of thing.
Why is your tailbone killing you?
Mine is displaced and the only thing that has really helped (other than good prescription meds) is the chiropractor. It has continued to improve to the point is is bothering me substantially less as time progresses.
Never had my tailbone become sore from riding (unless I’ve come off and landed on it )
Are you sure it’s tail “bone” and not sciatica type pain from a bulging disc or herniated disc etc? I have a herniated disk in my back and when it’s irritated it will radiate kind of around that area and sometimes down from butt to left thigh.
Might want to have a chat with an MD and see about MRI if it persists to rule out something more insidious/serious
I came off my horse March 24 (yes I remember the date!) and displaced my tailbone and had two hair like fractures. It still hurts to this day, but a nice fluffy sheepskin seat saver- brown to match my cwd, and a thinline half pad have made a world of a difference. Make sure this isn’t sciatica pain I would go get Checked out by a doctor!
I had terrible tailbone pain, which became so bad I thought I might have to stop riding. This is notable as I can ride through most anything. It got to the point where I almost couldn’t function in my job because I work in an office and I couldn’t sit… To condense what is a much longer saga involving spine specialists, it turned out to be my SI joint. They never could tell me WHAT was happening, only where it was happening. I tried joint injections and PT to no avail. After a combination of acupuncture and beginning pilates the problem is mostly gone. I can cause the pain to come back if I don’t keep up with pilates and if I ride in a saddle that is too deep for me (I ride dressage).
I am going to recommend the Ride-Light saddle pad. I started using one on my horse for fit reasons not for uncomfortable gait or me reasons, a girl at my barn whose horse has a very jarring trot asked to use it as her thinline wasn’t working out so great and felt a remarkable difference that she decided to buy one of her own. http://www.ride-light.com/
Believe it or not it was probably just a pulled muscle because the pain subsided with a naproxen which wouldn’t have helped if it was a bone problem. It’s slowly getting better now.
Naproxen does treat bone pain as well…
Time. That’s all that’s worked for me. And, frankly, I’ve been dealing with it for close to 30 years - since that first land-on my-spine fall, although it was the one last year (2 yrs ago?) that was the final nail in my riding coffin.
I find I can’t sit for any length of time - that is sit and relax, go for a quiet hack, long trail ride, or go foxhunting (especially when there are a lot of waiting around at checks). If I go straight to work on my horse, I survive, but that isn’t the way I like to do my schooling (which tends to be a combination of hacking/having fun and serious work). I know that for the first year after the most recent land-on-the-end of my spine crash, I couldn’t ride at all (however, I tried) and even went so far to buy a couple of Stubbens with the special seat. (Not great solution for me, as I really dislike riding in Stubbens. Getting my old Butet re-stuffed (thank you, Bevals) worked better.)
Now, I can ride again, but I am nervous about it, and have to be very careful. I read a lot of info about end of spine injuries, and, frankly, there is not a lot that can be done - surgery (if the disk is out of place), etc, is fairly risky.)
I was thinking about one of the WOW saddles - with its hole in the middle of the seat, but just spent a lot of money on the Stubbens…
I will look into acupuncture, however, can’t imagine why I didn’t think of that myself. Have been going to a massage/PT and that has helped. So has some prescription pain killers - I take one and am good for months!!! (2 packets has lasted me two years!!) (It’s one of those not available in the US.)
Other ideas and suggestions always welcome!!!
“Naproxen does treat bone pain as well.”
Agreed !
