My winter breeches review.

This is for all us “winter warriors” looking for winter breeches. I own a few different pairs and styles and happy to share my
experience with them!

For reference:
I live in southern Ontario. Not uncommon to see double digit negatives (celsius, of course). Tack up area is heated, arena is not. Since I’ll mention fit, I’m 5’5, weigh about 160 lbs, and carry my weight mostly in lower belly and thighs. My perfect fit breeches are Struck breeches in size 30.

Horze Thermal Grand Prix Breeches:
https://www.horze.com/horze-womens-grand-prix-full-seat-breeches-thermo-softshell-p-36608/p

These full seat breeches are a thick fleece on the inside and have a silicone full seat. I personally find the silicone not super sticky, which I’m fine with. They have pockets that I love. My iPhone XR fits in the pocket while working around the barn, and they are deep enough I don’t have to worry about it falling out. I can’t ride with the phone in my pocket but that’s not an issue with me. They have belt loops, a zipper, and double clasp closure. The waist band is wide.

Sizing:
I’m wearing these in a 28. They lose a bit of their shape once worn in. The biggest downfall for some may be the calf area. They are baggy in the calves, and the fabric wrinkles up. If you are wearing tight tall boots you may not like the fit. I, however, wear not-very-snug winter boots and don’t notice it. I would suggest going a full size below your normal breech size, and if you are typically between sizes go down two.

Washing:
I washed in cold, inside out, and hung up to dry. I also used fabric softener on them. They washed very nice, but I haven’t washed them enough to make comment on how the silicone will hold up. Full disclosure, I wear my breeches probably far to long before washing them.

Verdict:
I like these a lot. They look more professional than my Kerrit winter breeches, but definitely fit more relaxed than any other riding pant I own. Out of all my winter pants, these are the top contenders.

Kerrit Fleece Flow Rise Winter Tight
https://www.pleasantridge.ca/index.php/kerrits-performance-winter-breech.html

These are a thinner fleece lined riding tight. Knee patch style. No pockets. Personally, I don’t find them warm enough in true winter cold, but are ok for temperatures hovering around the freezing mark and above.

Sizing:
I wear these in a size large. They fit around my waist and thighs OK, however, they are way too tight in the knees. Almost uncomfortably tight in the knees. They loosen a bit with wear but the entire pant generally keeps its shape. I don’t think sizing up would help as the rest of the pant fits very well. I hate pants that are s/m/l compared to an actual pant size, and would say larger than a size 30 would be an XL.

Washing:
I wash these in cold water, and hung to dry. Use fabric softener They don’t go anywhere near a dryer.

Verdict:
These pants are OK. I don’t adore them, but haven’t gotten rid of them either. The price point is right for the quality, and although I don’t reach for them first, I still reach for them occasionally.

Kerrits Sit Tight N Warm Fullseats
https://kerrits.com/products/sit-tight-windpro-full-seat-breech
or
https://www.pleasantridge.ca/index.php/sale-kerrits-sit-tight-n-warm-pocket-breeches-full-seat.html

I have put two links above. One calls them “Sit Tight n Warm”, and the Kerrits website calls them “wind pro”, but I’m fairly certain they are the same pant. These pants are more fleeced in my opinion than the flow rise winter tight. They have a leg pocket which would be excellent for keeping a cellphone while you ride… if it was made large enough for my phone. Smaller phones would fit nicely. They are fullseat. Maybe it is because my pants are a few years older, as the kerrits website claimed the fullseat is fleece lined, but on my pants the seat is un-lined. And my bum can feel the breeze in them.

Sizing:
I wear these in a size large. Once again the knees are too tight! These pants have the “added bonus” of the fullseat seam running across the inside/top of the knees as well - it digs into your skin. The fullseat feels like I’m wearing a diaper, it’s so uncomfortably shapeless.

Washing:
These get washed in cold and get tossed in the dryer.

Verdict:
I don’t care for these pants. I wouldn’t repurchase, barely wear them, and have to be pretty desperate to put them on. When I do put them on, I’m reminded why I don’t like them.

Sit Tight Wind Pro Kneepatch Breeches
https://kerrits.com/products/sit-tight-windpro-kneepatch

These are the knee patch version of the fullseat Kerrit breeches above. They have the same features.

Sizing:
Again, I wear these in a size large. They fit perfectly. The knees aren’t tight. The entire leg is comfortably snug. They maintain their shape beautifully.

Washing:
Cold wash and into the dryer they go. Easy!

Verdict:
I love these pants. It’s a toss up between my Horze and these guys when I get dressed for the barn. I’m unsure why all my Kerrit pants fit differently, but these by far fit the best. I would definitely recommend these.

and that’s a wrap! I apologize for typos. I’m on nights and did this on my phone. I hope this will help others who are shopping for winter pants.

Last year I got full seat Kerrits Sit Tight and a discontinued model of Horse fleece. They are both great, but I feel like the Horse fits slightly better. I also have an older Kerrits sit tight that has lost the flocking on the full seat and a boot cut pair that are also great casual and hiking pants.

These seem to be the major fleece breeches available at least in Canada.

My favorite winter breeches are the Kerrits Powerstretch tights. They were super soft and warm plus they had a good size pocket on the right leg. I’m mad at myself for selling them (quit riding for a while) because they would be really useful right about now.

I have started wearing my winter breeches as snow pants for walking and they are the best thing ever. I don’t even know if the outdoor stores make anything like this, with a somewhat windproof exterior but not actual full scale ski pants.

You guys are awesome for posting these reviews! I was just given a pair of full seat breaches that are almost like skiing pants. They are Elation brand. I believe this is a, “Canada only“ brand. I live in the Cincinnati Ohio area, my family is from southern Ontario. Honestly I would never bother buying another pair of winter breeches as these are so awesome I can ride in them and walk the dog in them I can even play outside in the snow with the kids. I think they were fairly expensive but as I say they were a gift so yay for me!

Elation is the house brand of the Canadian Greenhawk tack store chain. I’ve had regular Elation breeches and liked the fit and style and price point but I was wearing them out way too fast  so I upgraded.

I think the Elation winter breeches are similar to the Kerrits line. Ontario needs to take winter gear seriously!!

I actually like my Kerrits Sit Tight and Warm for the coldest days I’m willing to ride. Mine are ancient now, and I have both the FS and KP models. They are warm, wind-proof, and wear like iron.

I also have the Ovation winter breeches. The are perfect for chilly days, but aren’t as warm as the Kerrits. They also pill and stain quite easily/badly.

Last year I got one of the Smartpak brand winter breeches, and I like them a lot. Too long for me, but wind proof and cozy feeling.

I just ordered a pair of the Tropical Riders winter breeches because a friend raves about hers. I’ll review those once I get them.

I bought these this year and love them!

Those are super cute!!!

I have these too, and I do like them (and always get compliments when I wear them) but:

  1. They are really thin (like yoga pants) so they aren’t super warm. Fine for indoors when it’s not too cold but they won’t be warm enough when it gets really cold, or to hack outside.

  2. I get instant static when I put them on. The quilted part on the front is stuck to my legs. I don’t seem to have this problem with any other breeches, summer or winter, so I think it’s the nylon material.

(I also live in southern Ontario so this is a great list!)

I’ll add:

Kerrits Performance Fleece tight (like this): https://greenhawk.com/wdItemDesc.asp?strilhID=Web&strmdNumber=DRC7539&stricSKU=DRC7539

I got this on clearance and just grabbed a medium without trying them on, as I have several other pairs of Kerrits winter breeches in medium (but other style).

They are SO TIGHT I thought that the kids size might have gotten mixed into the adult size bin. Not too bad once I get them on, but the legs are very tight and I have chicken legs, so I can’t see how other people without chicken legs could even get these on. Plus, they seem pretty low rise and like to pull down if I bend over. I’ve worn them a few times and I’m on the fence about keeping them or just selling them.

Elation Red Label Altitude Winter Tight: https://greenhawk.com/wdItemDesc.asp?strilhID=Web&strmdNumber=DRC9261&stricSKU=DRC9261

Very comfortable, super thick yoga-style waistband so they are pretty high rise. Fine for me as I have a long waist and I’m 5’9", but you could probably fold it if you needed to.

They are NOT what I would consider a “winter tight”. They are quite thin and although the inside is fuzzy, it’s not fleece. I consider them fall/spring tights, but could layer longjohns under for winter riding.

Just to throw another pair out there, I have the winter Pipers from Smartpak. I like that they feel like breeches, not pajama pants with a softshell outer and fuzzy inside. Granted, I live in Virginia, not Canada, but they are plenty warm for me.

Those look very nice. And on sale now! Bonus

I love the Kerrits Sit Tight n Warm. I have several pairs, from the originals (don’t know how old they are now) to 2 new pair I bought this year. They keep me warm.
But, I agree with others they are not figure flattering. At all. Oh well.

I ordered the Hadley’s from SP – and promptly sent them back. Way too thin. I like the breeches tho.

Eddie Bauer has some options. Last winter I got some polar fleece lined pants, and another pair of pull on pants that are fleecy on the inside and cut the wind pretty well. Plus they are boot cut, so if you want something that will come down over a boot or not have a gap at the ankle if you’re wearing running shoes, these are the ticket.

I would love a pair of winter breeches that have a rainproof or rain resistant inset down the front of the upper thigh. When I ride in my long rain coat, it tends to blow back off my leg at speed. It’s that upper leg that catches the rain. Does this exist?

Gaahhh!! Blonde moment! My softshells are Pipers, not Hadleys! I have the Hadleys for summer. Sorry for confusion! Will fix original post.

I have the SP Winter Pipers. I do not like the fit of pipers normally and these fit a little weird but they are so nice and warm i forgive them for the fit issue. I wear a 30 in Pikeurs. I sized down to a 28 in these based on reviews and was glad I did. The waist is too big, the thighs fit the way I want them too and if I went a size down the calves would probably be to tight. I like how they look, they are warm, and they are comfortable to ride in. I haven’t yet washed them and have only worn them a few times so not sure of longevity.

Yes!!! That’s what I need! Could you wear them over just plain leggings not needing an actual breech under? Would you sauna to death doing barn work in these,?

The softshell winter “Pipers” fit exactly like their normal Hadleys. I hate how the Pipers normally fit but love the fit on the Hadleys, and was super delighted when I ordered a cheap pair of them and realized that they fit like the breeches I actually liked! I was so happy with them I bought another pair while they were on sale. Very happy with them so far, though I’m only in MD and not dealing with Canadian type temps.

But I do like them so much that I’ve worn them around after getting home, to walk the dogs etc because they’re so cozy!
