Name that bony lump

I think my horse has a high splint on the outside of his right hind leg. Yes, weird place for a splint, but I can’t think of anything else it could be. He’s sound- maybe a tiny bit stiff on right hind at the canter.

He’s early 20s and I’ve had him since he was 6. I’m pretty good at keeping track of his legs, but it’s always possible that he could have had this for awhile and I just noticed. I think it may have happened in a paddock scuffle over a mare. He got a pretty good bite on the inside front leg also on the right side. Maybe he was kicked???

Anyone ever had this? Thoughts?

Bone spavin. Or bog spavin.

Not in the right place for a bog spavin - and not really at the joint either, so probably not a bone spavin.

OP - is the swelling soft or hard? If it’s hard, I think you’re correct in thinking it might involve the splint bone.

It’s bony and right at the top of where the splint bone would be.

I’d vote for a splint. Be interesting to see an X-ray.

Splint but definitely quite high for that size. I too would be curious to see what it looks like on an X-ray.

It’s a splint. My horse has/had one. It’s gone down some, but still noticeable - it’s been at least 4 years. He was never off from it and it never impacted his performance (he’s a grand prix dressage horse now) We figured it was probably from rolling outside or in his stall as he was not turned out with any other horses at the time.

Also pretty sure it s a splint

My 4 year old has a very similar lump on the outside of his right front foreleg about an inch and a half or maybe 2 inches below the knee. I was fairly certain it was a splint, but in my experience, splint typically resorb and this one is not doing that. I had my vet xray it and it appears to be a fracture of the splint bone–a small chunk fractured off and then it calcified around it. So since it is a fractured chip, it is unlikely to resorb. It does not affect soundness, it not impinging soft tissue and the vet dubbed it “a blemish”.
