Name this bit

I found this at our place. We have looked all over the internet but can not find out what it is called or if it is homemade. Do you?

Very cool. I was curious and found this similar bit on Etsy, described as a J.I.C. bit, made about 1880-1890 for working carriage horses who might spook or otherwise need a little something Just In Case.

I agree with BrownDerby, an old driving bit. My parents gave me a similar bit that they found in an antique store in North Carolina. Did not know about the “Just In Case” name!

To my eye the bit posted by BrownDerby is exactly the same.

Very cool find OP!

Thanks a lot. It is funny because I searched all over and could not find one that was similar to it. I looked up J.I.C. it was the first one.

Frank. I like the name Frank for this bit.

yes, it is a driving bit. Most of the driving barns I worked with had one in the tack room and they are fun to play with, but I never used one or know any one who has.

 I agree. Name this bit Frank.

All kidding aside, the bit shown is a cool antique and a conversation piece.
