Nameplate etiquette

I would like to purchase a stallplate for my friend for her new horse, I would like to put breeding info (i.e. sire and dam) on it as the horse is fantastically bred.

What is the correct way to do it–sireXdam?

I plan on putting the horse’s name on the top
breeding middle line
owner’s name bottom line.

Want to make sure I do it right! Thank you !!

Sire x Dam

Or you can you Sire / Damsire / Grand damsire

Or Sire x Dam x Damsire

It really depends what you want to highlight! My TB mare’s pedigree looks pretty darn impressive when you do it the Sire / Damsire / Grand damsire. Otherwise, the unknownledgeable eye (including mine!) might not notice how well bred she is.

I generally do Sire X Damsire when doing nameplates, since most people haven’t a clue who the dam “Fluffy” is, but they do know her sire “Donnerhall”. I don’t include the dam’s name unless the dam was a very well known horse.

If you do Sire/Dam/Damsire along with the horse’s name and the owner’s name, it may be too much information on a nameplate and difficult to read.

Many people do sire, dams sire.

For my own horses here I do sire, dam then dam sire. That is because I know all my mares and I think they should be included too! Many of my mares I have rode too so they are as special as the stallions to me.

You could do her up a gift certificate for a name plate and then let her chose what she wants on it?

I am getting a 4"X10" brass plate to match the others in the barn so will have plenty of room for 3 lines.

Thinking I will do sire and damsire on there. Would like to do sire/damsire/granddamsire but probably too many letters.

I would do sire / dam sire. I would do an “x” if it was the sire x dam. Just my preference.

sire x dam . the sire and damsire weren’t “crossed” is how i think of it lol.
