Is there one for each breed?
No one? I am wanting to know the guidlelines for naming a foal
There are no “rules” like there are for certain warmblood breeds, for example, when it comes to naming in order to have a registered foal (Andalusian or Lusitano) with IALHA or to have a PRE inscribed/revised in the Spanish studbook.
As far as I can tell, there is no real convention, at least in North America. It is pretty common to use the name of the parent of the opposite gender and change the last letter to masculinize or feminize (eg. my PRE mare’s sire is Hilandero; his dam was Hilandera). You can also repeat names as long as they are followed by the appropriate Roman numerals (my mare’s sire is Hilandero XVI!) so the name is not an exact duplicate of an existing name. Breeder or Farm prefixes/suffixes are encouraged.
You can pretty much choose whatever name you’d like, although there are few breeders who don’t use names that are at least Spanish (or sound Spanish ) for PREs. I don’t know as much about PSL’s (Lusitanos) ie. whether they are typically given appropriately Portuguese rather than Spanish names, but I suspect the same type of traditions hold true.
Thanks! Really appreciate it
