Naming Thread: Buckles, Boots, and Spurs

SHOW ME THE PUPPY!

Anywho…

Leddy (M.L. Leddy - they’re a custom boot maker)
Rios (Rios of Mercedes - high end boot maker)
Beck (Beck boots)
Smith (like a silversmith)
Braze (a silversmithing technique)

My farrier has a cattle dog named Hondo. He’s one of the best dogs I’ve ever met, and I go well out of my way to meet all the dogs.

Pic tax! I can’t find the slot to take the batteries out , so it has been difficult getting a non-blurry photo.

I love the bounce in the word “buckle” but I know I need a shortened word too and I dislike Buck.

Originally I was leaning toward colt, not sure why less so now. I LOVE chaps but I know non-horse people will say chap. I have a Keeper :orange_heart:. I love a bunch of these suggestions. You all are fantastic at this! I’m saving some for a future working dog. What will suit a little dog?

Just thought of pony as a possibility. A couple people met him this weekend and offered the following. I’m sharing so you can see the impression he makes:

Popcorn
Ping pong
Meerkat
Little $h!t (that one’s mine )

Scoot!

I love him

I would think Buckle would be short enough. The suggestions from your friends are all 2 syllables anyway. Another thought is (according to my mom’s naming system) to use 2 syllable names to diferentiate from commands that are (mostly) 1 syllable. Just my $.02

Snap (another way to buckle?). Clip(per)? What a cutey, whatever you name him!

OMG!

He is super cute! So not a Border Collie, but BC colors. Is he a Chin?? or a Papi?

Looks like his personality is as big as a mountain, I vote for Ranger. he looks a little bossy too

Oh Clipper! that is a good one!

When I was a teen we had a horse name Tucker Rocky. My mom decided on a whim to take him to the local show. We all called him Tucker. And for a quicker reaction would call him Tuck. Well he was naughty as they were riding away from the gate and she said, “Oh TUCK!!” right by the judge, which of course sounded like Oh F8($!.

You will get the same result with Buck, regardless if you liked Buck or not

I had a Huck and he tended to instigate a lot of, er, both words.

Any name with Uck is subject to interchangable letters

Yes, I know someone with a Puck who tells the judge, “His name is Puck. I’m not cursing at him.” I know a Buck, and that handler just lets it roll.

I called him a little $h!t in good natured humor. Well, BF has REALLY taken to that. Uh no. We need a real name pronto!

What about Pronto!?!? I know it does not go with your theme, but its cute!

Is Little Shit Papillon?

Or Tonto! Which is westerny… and means silly OR dizzy which seems SO fitting for a little papi!

Laredo? Has that been mentioned?
Conway (conway buckles)

Ok friends, bear with me. We are down to the top ten.

  • Buckle: I love the two-syllable word but not the one-syllable nickname, so someone talk me out of this.

  • Colt: why don’t I like this anymore?

  • Chaps: adorable! But I don’t want people not understanding and calling him, “Chap”

  • Trap: fun!

  • Justin: Real-people names are sometimes fun. Gosh, now that I think of it I’ve had three dogs with people names! VERY common in my circle.

  • Cinch: love the dual meanings. Maybe it would be a self-fulfilling prophecy and he’ll be an easy guy? :crossed_fingers:

  • Dally: Has a friendly, happy sound

  • Quirt: clever!

  • Chinks: ooooh good one!

  • Scoot: my doG this is adorable! And with his registered name, it is very clever.

A family member already identified his walk-up song/anthem: Garth Brooks “Rodeo” (skip the first 30 seconds) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMB1a0RBqd4

Now that’s a riot, for a Papillon and not a Cattle Dog or Aussie. :joy: And there’s the breed for the guess-the-breed folks. For ten years, I’ve said I’ll have another Pap in my life. Life is short, life is hard, get the dog/cat/pony/horse/houseplant! :smiling_imp:

good list!

here are my top 3

Scoot
Dally, (which I would end up calling him Dilly Dally)
Chaps (I don’t mind the dropped S for Chap)

honorable mention:
Buckle
Cinch
Justin

Chink - while I know you mean the western riding way of using this, like chaps; but it is also an ethnic slur for people with Chinese decent. You may have to explain this one to some people for the rest of his life.

Agree on Chink. I’d steer off that, too.

Chaps would probably morph to Chappie, at least in my house.

As a teen, the Outsiders was a favorite book and movie, so Dally is up there for me, too!! And Scoot. He’d become Scooter around here, though. Boot Scoot & Boogie!

We have a mini at the farm named Boot, Scoot & Boogie, complete with nameplate halter. The name is longer than the pony.

That’s so cute!

Go with Buckle and call him Bucky if you need a nickname.
