nationwide pet insurance

Does anyone have experience with nationwide pet insurance? My vet recommended this years ago when it was VPI. I have another dog with trupanion. I would prefer that insurance, but this dog is now 9 years old and it would cost me a mint to change and re-insure him. He has no problems and I’ve never used insurance. I’ve only kept it because I have hound dogs and they get into trouble and I can’t afford the 3k bill anymore or extensive cancer or what have you. The reviews for nationwide are horrible, so I was wondering if I as wasting my money. TIA

I have heard that HealthyPaws gets good reviews. No wellness care, pre-existing conditions are excluded and the office visit isn’t covered. However lots of alternative therapy is covered if it is recommended by a vet.

I know nothing about Nationwide pet insurance.

Nationwide has been nothing but excellent for me, where are you reading horrible reviews? I’ve heard mostly great things but as with any insurance company, experiences will vary.

I insured my dog when she was 6 months old with Nationwide, so about two years ago. When she was a year, she was attacked by my neighbor’s dog, cue $600 vet bill, and Nationwide covered all of it when I submitted my claim.

If your dog is older or has has existing medical conditions, you’re going to have a hard time getting any insurance company to take you on unless you’re willing to pay. It seems the key is to insure them early before they have bigger health concerns and exclusions, and that goes for any carrier as you seem to be familiar with. I’d give a few different companies a call and compare costs and coverage, I think I got six or seven quotes before I chose Nationwide. They ended up having the best coverage for the cost, I only took out a plan for around $30 a month, so a lower tier.

Good luck on your search!
