Nearly time for new (MIPS) helmet

I cruised through the helmet topics that came up in search but most are a few years old so here I go starting a new thread!

I am looking to buy a new helmet during the upcoming safety awareness week with discounts on helmets. My current Tipperary Windsor is still going strong but I believe you’re supposed to retire a helmet after 3-5 years or after a fall. I am 3 years in with my current helmet and so I want to have a spare helmet waiting in the wings either for a year from now when I retire my current helmet or if I have a fall between now and then (knocking on wood…)

I can always get a new Windsor the same as I have now but am also lusting after the Charles Owen Halo. I have only been riding for 5 years and my first helmet was a GPA, which got backburnered as soon as I got the Windsor with MIPS. Any new helmet must have MIPS (because why wouldn’t I?).

I tried on some Halos for fit yesterday since I’m vacationing in a city with many tack shops (where I live has Greenhawk and that’s about it) and loved it. The two attached photos is the oval fit (and I need round) but … SO pretty! I don’t need the (expensive) sparkly top but one can always dream.

So having said all that, I am enamoured with the Halo. I know for sure I can also do well with the Windsor. I tried on a few other brands at the tack shop yesterday but they didn’t have MIPS so they’re automatically a “no”. I have a large-ish noggin - 7 1/4 GPA, 58 CO, or Tipperary Medium dial on the largest setting.

For those of you who have the Halo, how do you like it? Photos of the fancy sparkly (but oval instead of round) CO Halo… I didn’t get a photo of the round Halo that fit better.

I have a Halo and really like it. Super comfortable and excellent air flow.

Heads up that I had to go up a size v. my previous non-MIPS CO (AYR8).

If you are looking for a backup helmet, the CO Kylo is very nice for the price. I like my Halo better, but I picked up a Kylo as a “just in case” helmet.

I just purchased the CO Kylo helmet, I thought it was extremely comfortable but not as ventilated as my One K Defender.

For summer I’m buying this Troxel Helmet for schooling. It was comfortable and I could feel the stores AC through the ventilation. https://www.troxelhelmets.com/products/terrain-helmet-with-mips-technology

When is helmet safety week? I fell off, and need to replace that helmet. I have been riding in the One K MIPS for a few years, now, and really like it.

I got a Uvex Extential II w/ MIPS recently and like it. Much better ventilated than my last helmet.

I think it’s this weekend. I think some stores run week-long sales as well.

Edit: I see some stores are running it this weekend. USEF says its Sept 16-22: https://www.usef.org/media/press-releases/us-equestrian-safety-awareness-week-to-continue

I really like the fit of my Trauma Void but it doesn’t have the best ventilation for summer. May need to find a “summer helmet”.

I have the Uvex also and I really like it for daily wear.

Not to derail/hijack, but has anyone used the OneK replacement policy? How long did it take you to get a new helmet?

Trying to decide if I should just buy a new one this weekend on sale.

Did you check the One K replacement policy? I think it is up to 3 years and the discount is pretty significant.

ETA: that was an increidbly fast turn-around. They must have mailed the replacement the same day they got my old helmet. Huge thumbs up!

I have one of these as a spare, and for extra hot days. My main helmet is a TraumaVoid Lynx. I have a second one as a show helmet that is ultrasuede covered and has a glittery stripe.

I might try the CO Kylo since it comes in navy gloss, and I show in patent navy boots.

I was also interested in the CO Halo, but given the price, the safety ratings weren’t as good as some of the lower-priced MIPS helmets, so I wrote it off.

I tried on a bunch of the mentioned helmets last year when replacing my OneK. If the Halo fits you, the Kylo may not–I found that it sat much, much deeper on my head. It was also more of an oval shape. I ended up with a Luna, which is basically a less blingy, significantly cheaper version of the Halo, but I do hunters and just wanted matte black anyway. The round OneK may actually be a good fit for you, as that’s what I had previously.

Thanks for the tip about the Kylo / OneK fit!
I tried the OneK when it first came out but it was the oval not the round… so of course it was not a great fit.
I believe the Luna doesn’t have the MIPS component. Is that correct?
My line of thinking is that the MIPS is the most non-negotiable (after fit, of course) part of my decision making process right now. Safety features are high on my priority list… I ride in a body protector as well, even though I only do very low level flatwork that one day might be deemed dressage.
My birthday is coming up and I will be getting money to put towards a helmet between my DH (well, he doesn’t “give” me money from our accounts so much as encourage me to splurge), inlaws, and parents so the price difference between the Tipperary Windsor and CO Halo will be covered … making me even a TEENY tiny bit tempted to get the sparkley top one but I know that’s ridiculous considering I don’t show and barely ever go off property… and ride at a rather low-key barn. The only one to impress most days is my horse

Eh, if it makes you happy when you put it on, that’s what counts. I school in fancy boots and enjoy the heck out of them for my own sake.

With sales on next week I have two outstanding decisions:

$$ Sparkle top or black matte
Wide Brim (Luxe model) or Regular

I emailed the shop where I tried on the one in-stock “plain” helmet and they will offer the discount on both in stock and special order helmets. I thought if the discount was only on in stock items that would “make” my decision for me on sparkle vs matte.

Who else is getting a new helmet next week?
