Neato Thread Cleaner for Stud Holes

Today my really generous farrier gave me this new type of thread cleaner that looks like it will be far superior to my old safety spin tee tap. He demonstrated how the one side of the tool easily pulls out the old cotton plug from the stud hole and the other end of the tool cleans out the threads without lifting off the shoe from the foot. If my horse would pull his foot away, there’d be no danger of him stepping on the tool. It appears like it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Has anyone here actually used this? Neato Thread Cleaner

Interesting! Looks way easier than using a shoe nail to pull out little tufts of cotton and then blindly trying to get the safety tap lined up correctly.

To clean out the threads, do you just spin the “threaded” end around the stud hole a couple times?

Yes, you just insert the “threaded” end of the tool and spin it around. Its diameter is about half that of the stud hole so it inserts easily. Or at least it does when used by my farrier while the horse is standing in cross ties in the barn. I wonder if it all works as easily when the horse is tied to the trailer at a show!

I get wary of fancy tools when basic things work. I have my own hole cleaner. It is a piece of 1.5 inch diameter wood dowling. I drilled a small hole in one end and put a 6p finishing nail with the tip sticking out. Works great! I’ve never found anything that works as well as a safe-t-tap

Of course decades ago I tried all of the possibilities of what to put in the hole after studs were removed. The best thing I found was to pull the studs and then have the horse stand on bedding. Dirt works well too. Of course, that is a whole nother discussion.
