Need a Better Cat Litter

I have started using Catalyst too. I like it. It doesn’t track as bad and when it does, it isn’t like walking on grit. I get a bag every 2 months (for 1 cat) and so far have put off the delivery a couple times because I didn’t need it. I bought their scoop and at first didn’t like it but boy, it works a treat to make short work of litter box cleaning.

We use OKOCAT Super Soft. It’s a wood litter:

Not dusty, not heavy, doesn’t cement to the box, clumps really well, controls odor well.

Arm and Hammer has a new lightweight one that comes in bags called Hard Ball (I think). I’ve only found it on Amazon. I have 8 indoor cats currently and a bag lasts me almost a month

For wood litter, there’s also Cedarific. Limited distribution, so if it’s not available locally, it’s probably not available at all, but it’s nice and soft, low dust, smells good, and cats like it a lot. It does track. Super lightweight, and it’s CHEAP.

Iirc, instructions say to mix wet spots back in, which is gross. It’s not hard to take them out.

I tried the walnut litter and no one liked it :frowning:

I do like Sustainably Yours, and Abound.

Sustainably Yours is recommended by Jackson Galaxy. It’s extremely low dust, clumps HARD and has very little smell. It’s bio degradable and flushable. It does track all over, is kind of heavy and is a bit on the expensive side.

I’m currently using Abound. Bio degradable, very little smell, low dust, clumps pretty good (totally scoopable). It does stick to the side a bit, but nothing crazy. Cheaper than the Sustainably yours, and available at my local Kroger, which is nice. It’s lighter than clay for sure. Tracks pretty bad though.

I am a huge fan of World’s Best, the purple bag.

I do have a metal sturdy higher-cost scoop (bought a year ago, so pre Catalyst). I have loved it. But I definitely have had the thought with Catalyst that while my metal scoop works great, that litter would not work well with just any scoop. I doubt the old el-cheapo plastic ones I used to use would work that well with it.

The basic plastic scoop works but it takes a lot of sifting. I bought the Catalyst scoop with my first order but didn’t like its weight. However, one day when I was sifting…and sifting…I tried the Catalyst scoop and very little sifting required. The substrate just falls through the scoop leaving the clumps and even small bits. I wish the Catalyst did clump a bit better but it looks like they have been working on that.

With only 1 cat, it took me quite awhile to switch over to 100% Catalyst. So I will see on my next order. I was previously using grass litter (Chewy’s brand) but it tracked so bad. I would rather deal with looser clumps IN the box than gritty substrate all over the house.

With four cats, I’ve had the best results from A&H Naturals

Naturals* Clumping Litter | Natural Cat & Kitty Litter | ARM & HAMMER™ (armandhammer.com)

I have a serious metal scoop with sides, so sifting is easy each morning

Recently I’ve seen a lot of people recommending stainless steel litterboxes. Supposedly they’re not as porous as plastic, so I wonder if that would help the issue of cemented litter. I’ve been eyeing this one:

They’re definitely more expensive, but more durable. Maybe in the long-term would be cheaper than the recurring expense of a pricey litter?

I think I’ve seen a couple of commercials about that.

I hadn’t realized A&H made Feline Pine.

Good to hear from you, @ChocoMare; I haven’t “seen” you in ages. Thanks for posting about your litter.

I’m definitely going to shop for something new. Just yesterday I opened a new box of Slide, and this morning for the first time the bathroom smells like someone peed in there. (Well, duh, but it normally doesn’t smell like it.) lol

So I may shop my way through the litters y’all have recommended and, budget permitting, may try some.

Thank you all very much.

I just read an article saying that rice makes a good litter if you run out of your regular litter. The rice must be uncooked, and can be brown or white. Doesn’t say whether or not it clumps.

I don’t think I’d want to try it.

For years now, I have used non-medicated chick feed. It doesn’t clump or have any odour. It’s also cheap and light weight

Silage smell then.

Thank you very much for the coupon!

I think I’m going to try something besides Slide once this huge heavy boxful is gone. I may have just gotten a bad lot this time; it’s not even clumping as well as usual.

Okay so silage smells gross :joy: Good to know!

We switched one of our plastic boxes (we had 3 plastic boxes and have 2 cats FWIW) for one of these inside a litter box enclosure furniture piece so that it was puppy proof and the combo of the box and enclosure has made a HUGE difference in smell. We are planning to swap the remaining 2 plastic boxes for another 1 stainless and enclosure.

Fermented corn. I’m not a fan, wouldn’t say it smells gross to me, but I can understand it smelling gross to some. I spent a fair bit if time in dairy farms growing up so got used to it. I’ve never found the smell of dry corn kernels as strong.
