I think the OP is looking for a thermometer for horses. The Thermworks is a great cooking thermometer (we have one and love it) but you would never want to use it on an animal - the ultra sharp probe would cause disastrous damage!
I love my Thermapen for the kitchen, but yeah… it’s sharp! I didn’t see one with a rounded tip there in a quick look around (except the ones with the cables and detachable probes, and that’s going to take two hands, so not ideal.) . I’ll email them though and see what they have. Their stuff is definitely durable, I can’t even remember when I bought mine.
My vet does not feel the digitals are reliable. She threw all hers out and went back to an old fashioned mercury one. She said that too many times she’s taken temps twice in a row and got big variations in temp. Once horse was obviously sick, and the temp did not register over 99. She took the temp with a mercury thermometer and got 104.
Look around for a scientific pen thermometer. They come with a blunt end. The one I linked was the first Google hit that looked about right, but I’m on my phone. Maybe I missed something.
Obvs don’t stick something up your horses butt that has a peircing tip, folks.
Okay, I can’t let this go because this forum has viewers/members with all levels of experience (or inexperience) and someone might think that any thermometer is suitable for horses or dogs or whatever. So not true.
PSA - You need a medical or veterinary thermometer! A search of “scientific thermometers” found none with a bulb or blunt end.
For the OP looking for a thermometer with replaceable batteries here is one:
I’ve used both the more expensive scientific / long probe units and the drug store $5 versions. One thing I learned with the drug store versions is that the 5 second / wait till it beeps results are not usually accurate. I get better readings if I leave the probe in for a longer period of time - I usually watch the display and wait until it stops increasing for 30 seconds before using that as the final reading.
I guess thanks for making me walk to the barn to get the info of the one I have. The one I bought at A VETERINARY SUPPLY HOUSE probably ten years ago. It lives in my brush bucket, taking abuse. Has a replaceable battery (AAA I think, something you’re even likely to have in the house or at least be able to pilfer from your remote control. I think I’ve replaced it once.) And I certainly trust it more than your grocery store thermometer because it’s an actual scientific instrument.
Here ya go. This must be the ONLY scientific pen thermometer out there with a blunt end! Amazing!
Look at all these lab thermometers with a blunt end! It’s amazing you weren’t able to find any–is your google broken, maybe? Something to look into, I imagine that’s frustrating
BTW, isn’t it cool that Valley Vet even sells the laboratory thermometer that I use? Almost like other people ALSO use lab thermometers on their livestock, whoa! Makes it so easy to acquire!
