Need a lunge cavesson that stays centered

I have a really nice lunge cavesson from Ireland that doesn’t twist and endanger the eye, but the central noseband ring WILL slightly shift to the side if there is a blast of high spirits/pulling on the line.

The noseband is jointed, and maybe I’m just not tightening it enough - I feel like I would have to crank it closed tighter than I’m willing to do to get it to stay in place though…

Are the fixed (non-jointed) nosebands better for this issue, and where would you get one? I’ve searched far and wide online and this is all I came up with.

I tighten mine fairly tight - but I cannot see if this one has the strap that goes just in front of the cheekbone, which also needs to be tight. As long as the cheekpiece keeps below the eye, it is OK.

If the noseband and throatlatch are sitting on the proper spots (the particularly bony parts of the horse’s face, especially with regard to the throatlatch, which should sit along the horse’s cheeks), then you can – and are supposed to – tighten them down a little further than with a bridle. Otherwise, the best option would be to have someone put on another throatlatch, so the cavesson looks something like: http://cdn0.fast-serve.net/cdn/balance/The-BALANCE-39-Magic-39-Lunge-Cavesson-CAV_800_3RDDY.jpg. You shouldn’t need to tighten things down so far with that sort of configuration.

I have this one, and it stays centered. It is adjustable and has fit a variety of head shapes and sizes. I really like it. I bought it to replace my jointed one (that did not stay centered).

Scroll down to the solid caveson, I have this one for my large WB g and it works great. I also use the flexible one for lighter working horses (my gelding used to have quite a bit of woo wee to him).

I like these lighter cavassons compared to the traditional heavy lunge cavassons used. I have seen the MM cavasson and did not like it, did not fit the horse the rider was using it on.

I just saw one of the Barefoot brand ones in person recently. It does have the stabilizing chin strap and the whole thing was quite pretty, nice leather, etc. A little bulky. I didn’t ask the owner if it slipped at all.

I’ve been using a Micklem Multi-Bridle (bitless) as a longe cavesson lately. It moves side to side a little on my horse, but not much. Could be tightened to avoid that I bet.

Wow, that’s a really nice cavesson, can you supply a link to the supplier please

Here’s the link.

Hastilow also makes a Wels-type caveson that doesn’t slip. Nice, soft leather. Very lightweight for all those straps. I have one. I like it.

I have a very old Wels cavesson, it’s jointed, fits most horses well but the center ring on the noseband does not stay centered entirely. It probably would if I used the side rings for the side reins, but I seldom do. I have not found it a concern.

Interesting that you posted this link because I just ran across this one last week. Paired with their “physio” bridle, it looks like it could be a useful piece of equipment. I often do some longeing and riding in the same session and it would be nice to have a single piece of tack for making the transition without needing a “wardrobe change” and without having to attach the longe line to the bit (I hate doing that).

I like how the crown piece is shaped and padded around the ears. I am not sure how the bit would function hanging from bit straps that are attached to the cavesson. I think it might interfere with the bit function (?) and therein is my hesitation for trying this setup.

If you’ll scroll down the page to the “Similar Threads” section and click the first link you’ll find some other options, including this one:

Can you confirm that the top noseband piece is leather covering a solid piece of metal inside? I think this cavesson has a greater chance of the nose ring staying nicely centered. The jointed kind, depending on where the joints lay and the shape of the nose, can just be hard to tighten down well I think. Unless I’m just being a baby about getting it tight enough.

I ordered this one. The gentleman that makes them will make it based on your measurments. The nose piece is not custom, but fits an average sized horse well, and all the strap lengths can be custom.
The padding on the nose piece is good. The whole thing is quite substantial. Quick turn around and good price.
I took the browband off. The strap around the jowl keeps it from interfering with the eye.

There’s another thread about keeping a bridle from falling off, where people recommend running a strap from throat latch to noseband. I thought that a western chin strap would work well. I am going to try this on my longeing cavesson, to see if it keeps it a bit more stable.

Thanks for posting. I have a cob and need one also.
