Need advice about New Renegade Boots

I just got a pair of Renegade Boots for my newly barefoot horse. They fit great and he is sound to ride while wearing them. Yeah! But today they turned sideways a bit so I had to get off and straighten them and get back on. I am guessing that I did not have the bottom strap tight enough. Do you pull it really tight? I know to leave 2 fingers space on the top strap. Thanks for any suggestions.

In my experience, the bottom strap should be snug but doesn’t need to be super tight. You want enough strap to overhang slightly, maybe an inch. More than that seems to mean the cable needs adjusting. I often have to play with mine to get the right fit, you get used to it the more you use them! I’ve also emailed with customer support at Renegade, they’ve been very helpful. Good luck with your boots!

Renegade boots has a FB group, If you facebook I would suggest joining the Renegade group. There are a lot of experts on there that can help you out with their real life experience.

Shorten the cable, and tighten the bottom strap. You can tighten the bottom strap with all your might and not hurt your horse.

In my experience you CAN tighten the bottom strap too tight, which can cause a couple issues (it did for me, every hoof and horse is different of course, YMMV). When I first had them I tightened it too tight and my horse got bruised heel bulbs. If the strap is too tight the hoof can kind-of “pop” out, which was the issue I was having earlier this year. Renegade helped me out, I adjusted my cables better, and no issues since.

yes, the strap should not be excessively tight, as it can cause heel bulb bruising. If your horse is newly barefoot, it’s possible he has slightly contracted heels, so you may need a different-size heel captivator until his feet settle into being barefoot. Definitely recommend the fb group, you can post pictures there and get expert commentary  You can also give the Renegade folks a call – they’re very helpful and will work with you to get a good fit!

Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I adjusted the cable today so hopefully the boots will fit better tomorrow. They didn’t shift today when I rode but the velcro strap is too long so hopefully shortening the cable will help this. The FB page is a good source of info.
