Need advice for bandaging a cat's upper hind leg

Friends, is there anyone around who can help me with some advice or expertise around bandaging a cat’s upper hind leg?

  • Cat has a lump, it seems to be a bloody tumor thing going on that has blown out. It’s on the rear/inside about level with the stifle.
  • Cat was last seen by the vet Thursday, had perfect bloodwork,
  • the bleeding isn’t stopping after me just holding a non-stick pad there for half an hour
  • the bleeding hole is about 2 mm
  • It’s not a huge amount of blood but he can’t keep losing it indefinitely and he’s tired of me holding him.
  • cat otherwise seems fine and happy.

The emergency vet is a 2 hour car ride and the cat will be very agitated in the carrier that long. And since he’s not in distress now that’s not my first choice (especially without a bandage). Ideally I’d like to get him to his regular vet but of course that’s Tuesday (at best).

I have supplies but I just don’t know how to wrap something so flexible.

Has bleeding started/increased since you saw the vet?
Was the thing bleeding then?
Cat likely licking the wound site, causing the bleeding.
Try a sterile nonstick gauze pad under vetwrap.
Just don’t wrap too tightly.
Be prepared for cat to get it off.
Do you have a Cone of Shame?

  • It wasn’t bleeding when we saw the vet. Of course the first indication that it might was Friday evening of a holiday weekend.
  • The cat is not licking it so that at least is good.
  • While trying to work out next steps I put the cat down for a bit. He jumped up into his favorite secret high shelf and is resting quietly up there, and it looks like the bleeding has slowed with him being quiet, at least enough. So I think I’m stable for now.

All the videos I find on youtube are about stabilizing the hind leg, which isn’t so much what he needs, but looks like I probably need to bandage the whole leg down to the paw and I can probably reach that space well enough to hold a bandage on there if I’m clever. For now fingers crossed that it’s done for a bit.

Thanks for the comment!

If you’re trying to bandage proximal to the stifle, you’re goin to need to wrap whe whole leg to get it to stay up.
This video shows how it’s done on a dog.
Pretty similar with a cat.

Thank you! That’s EXACTLY what I needed. So helpful!! Thank you so much!!

The trick especially of putting more wrap around the hock so it doesn’t bunch, the way to get over the stifle, and the explanation of the use of those stirrup strap tape pieces was especially valuable.

My goodness, that wrap isn’t going anywhere! Thanks for the link.
