Need Advice on Selling Trailer

I’ll remain vague so this doesn’t come across as a sales post. I really need to unload my trailer and I’ve posted it to all of the usual spots - Facebook groups, horseclicks, Craigslist - but I’m wondering if it would just be easier to take to a dealer.

Has anyone done this? I don’t want to trade it in, I just really don’t want a trailer anymore.

Any advice or better sites to list the trailer? TIA!

Most dealers probably won’t buy it off you - they may consign and market it for you in exchange for a commission. Depending on how pricey the trailer is, this can be worth it if a buyer will need financing.

Is your trailer something irregular, or very large? both of those factors tend to reduce interest in a trailer. The ones that go the fastest are the cheap little old steelies - then the smallest trailers that can be pulled by the smaller vehicles. The ones that take much longer are the larger ones, or very weird layouts.

Have you tried Horsetrailerworld.com? When I was looking to trade up, two dealers offered me 1K as a trade-in on my bumper pull. I saw similar used trailers on-line for 4.5K to 6.5K. I spent an afternoon power-washing the trailer, cleaning the windows and making minor repairs. I took lots of professional looking pictures and sold it in 5 days for thousands more than the dealer offered. It did have new tires, had been recently inspected and was maintained properly.

That’s good to know.

It’s a normal 3-horse slant so nothing out of the ordinary. I think I’m just being impatient.

I sent my trailer to a local dealer on consignment. It was a lovely 4h head to head with dressing room in prime condition. I just didn’t have the ability to market it since it was a big ticket trailer. Quite happy with orchard trailer sales in MA - they sold it above my asking price including their commission.

I sold my Brenderup Solo in one day on Horse Trailer World for asking price. Then, I bought a Hart Gooseneck on there. After that, I sold the Hart and found a Silver Star with a LQ on Horse Trailer World. You can get a good feel for a realistic price point and it was really easy to sell or buy on there.

Not sure where you are, but Dixie Horse and Mule in Newton AL may be an option to just buy it from you: https://www.dhmco.com/tradein/

Blue Ridge Trailers will take trailers on consignment if the pass Blue Ridge’s inspection. When they sell a used trailer they provide a 1 year warranty on it. It’s a nice selling point.

I’ve often wondered the same thing. I have a c and c Lq and I worry about when it’s time to sell. I’ve just assumed that I’ll take a bath on it so I might as well enjoy it for as long as I can.

I had a Horse Van that I wanted to sell earlier in the year. I’m in Central Florida – I took it to a large trailer dealer in Ocala and they took it on consignment. They marketed it and sold it within about 10 days to a woman from California. I was very pleased – it would have taken forever for me to sell it on my own.

I have a C&C gooseneck and am surprised by the number of people who offer to buy it from me at random. They are a brand with a good reputation. You might be surprised.

I sold my older shorter steel trailer on FB in 3 weeks. I marked it above what I thought it was worth in anticipation of haggling. I took a million pics and sent them to people even if they didn’t ask for them as the trailer needed some work. I had quite a few tire kickers, several offers of making payments or trading me for semi feral fillies.

I got slightly below what i wanted by a guy who spent over an hour looking at it.

May I ask which trailer dealer it was?

I sold a trailer in a few hours on horsetrailerworld a few years ago, but it was the sort of “deal” I knew would go fast, older trailer in great condition but not very expensive (it was a 20 year old Trail Et). So it “fit” the sort of buyer who can show up with cash.

The last trailer I sold, I took to Hitch and Tow in Aiken to sell on commission. I felt it was at a price point where maybe more buyers than not would want to finance it and that made the deal more complicated, for me… not for Hitch and Tow! So I got a little less than I hoped and exactly what I expected, and the difference between the two was a price well paid for not having to deal with tire kickers or people offering me a payment plan. Also, I have limited space to store a trailer and the new one was getting delivered in a week.

So I guess it mostly depends on how you want to deal with selling a trailer.

Thank you!

What is it about the horse world? Everyone wants to make payments. That is what a bank is for. Gee whiz!
