Need an effective antiseptic soak for an injured hoof.

What would you recommend for a hoof with an old injury where there’s some recent separation from the laminae? I have a call into the “hands on” vet, but she’s usually swamped, and it may take some time to get her here. (My trailer is in the shop.)

Thank you.

I am not an expert on feet but my go to is animalintex with a duct tape boot.

Betadine or concentrated Lysol in a pinch, otherwise I’ve used 1 qt water, 1 oz. Oxine, 1/4 tsp citric acid for a white line case.

I’ve honestly had the best success with the Lysol soaks and soaking it in cotton balls and packing the foot, wrapping it with duct tape. How to use it is on Pete Ramey’s website.

This past summer I was dealing with a puncture wound in the hoof sole. For a week I was soaking twice a day, and then once a day for another week. The vet had me soaking with water mixed with Betadine so that the resulting liquid was a light tea color.

In practice that meant about 16 oz of water to 1/4 cup of betadine.

Thanks for your suggestions. This started with a nasty abscess right above the coronary band which I treated with straight betadine, animalintex, gauze wrap and vet wrap holding it all in place. Then, when I was picking out the hoof yesterday, I saw that the injured part had separated from the sound part of the hoof wall–making sort of a flap. Other than that, the sole seems okay. I’ve used duct tape as a boot in the past, so know the procedure. (Whoever first started that deserves a medal.)

Lysol like for cleaning floors?

Yes, Lysol like cleaning floors. This stuff. It’s cheap and works as well as the pricey stuff. Kills just about everything except healthy tissue.
I use this to soak
