Hmm, i may be riding a new horse, a somewhat “energetic” and greenish mare…it’s a Halloween Hunt, so, i need a costume idea. nothing too flappy. must be comfy… i do plan on wearing boots, breeches+helmet…
The lady who does the scent drags for us, and is almost always the “Fox”, found a fox helmet cover. It isn’t floppy at all, and just goes over her helmet like any other cover.
Last year for our Halloween Hunt, I dressed up myself as an Indian and even decked my hunt horse out in war paint! (I looked up the meanings of each war symbol that could/would be painted on their horses and I picked the ones that best fit my hunter.) It helped that my Dad makes bows and arrows, as well as, has his own handmade deerskin quiver, to make my outfit a little more authentic. I really wanted to go out as Xena the Princess Warrior, but I didn’t have enough time to make my outfit as good as I wanted to. Other members went as: The Headless Horseman, “Masquerader”, a real fox!! (our Huntsman, she was awesome!), 3 Musketeers, Zorro, Skeletor, Hippie, etc. It was a super fun hunt!!

(mind you, for some reason I seemed to have forgot my velvet helmet cover. I’m surprised I didn’t get shamed, being as I am a whipper-in. Oops!)

Hope you find a good idea! =D Good luck and show pictures!!
Well if you have a chestnut, your horse can be a giraffe (use white tempura paint for the markings, wrap tail with giraffe markings and add some black hair at the end. If you have a mare, the horns should have hair sticking out, but if you have a boy, the horns are smooth). You can be on safari (e.g pith helmet, khaki, large binoculars). Should be absolutely stunning. Be sure to report back with pictures!!!
Fox says that the Gorilla is hatching plot with Chickens
Pleasantmeadow’s Amwell Valley hunt has a very creative group of members who do amazing things for the Halloween hunt. One of the most memorable ones was a lady gorilla in a polka dot bikini. I think there is a pic of it is on the AVH website.
We have had milk cows, witches, and clowns at some of the ones of attended. I’ve gone as Carmen Miranda, with the fruit head dress. (The grapes were eaten before the galloping started…) Horse radish was an easy costume.
My son has gone as astronaut, ( He is now a grad student in astro-biology) Fox conspiracy theorist, (Tin foil hat cover, muttering conspiracy headlines a la tabloids, fake fox tail from the back of coat, fox make-up) He mixed fox schemes and cover stories into the mix)
My DH was brave enough to go as Superman. (blue ski longjohns, red satin lady’s bikini underwear, cape.) He was on my elderly advanced event horse/hunter)
My boarding barn has a little Halloween horse event, and I usually don’t dress for it, but last year I was under lots of peer pressure, so I put together a last minute costume…pony & I were a Vegas wedding couple, the morning after. I had on sunglasses, a tuxedo jacket, white shirt & a tie, carrying a wine bottle and two plastic champagne flutes. My pony bride wore a lovely veil (which didn’t seem to bother her, but it wasn’t windy), shiny strands of Mardi Gras beads, and her high heels dangling around her neck, “walk of shame” style. It was quick & easy, and everyone enjoyed the wine later.
If I can figure out how to load a photo from the home computer (still don’t have the hang of the Mac), I’ll get one up.
We didn’t have to ride in our costumes, or I might have made some changes.
This year I’m thinking of being Mary Poppins and dressing the pony as the pony as the merry-go-round horse.
