Anyone one have a phone number for a cat rescue that might be able to help me in southeast PA? I’ve called several around Montgomery Co. and they just can’t help me because they are overwhelmed with kittens. I’m at wits end trying to help a white with black young homeless cat that I had hunting and living around my farm for several months. My GSD had chased her/him from the fenced yard several times thinking that anything that runs from her is vermin to be killed, so keeping the cat is not an option. I finally convinced the cat to come to me with an open can of cat food but the kitty was more interested in rubbing on me and purring in my lap to eat! I’ve spent the last six weeks trying to find the kitty a forever home and finally I have someone who will take the cat as soon as her older kidney failing cat dies (which may or may not be soon, he’s 17) So I need to find a foster for a few months or they could have her forever. I have her locked in my tack room (where the window doesn’t open) and it’s going to get too hot in there soon. This cat was someone’s pet. It’s litter box habits are impeccible and she/he is spotlessly clean. She/he doesn’t try to run out the door each time I enter, but walks, yes that’s right, walks beautifully on a leash, keeping up with me. This is one very sweet cat that purrs and runs up to me to be held and petted everytime he/she sees me and deserves a real home not a stuffy tack room. I’m willing to drive this young kitty cat where ever if it will get a home with people to love it. (I can forward pic.s to any rescue who would “courtesy” list it on their website)
just a thought…why not try finding some cat forums, and see if you can post a listing…sounds like the sort of cat a cat-lover would be thrilled to have…(except that i already have about 19 barn cats thanks to feral arrivals and trying to trap/spay them all)
also, how about posting at a cat specific vet?..i know there is one in the collegeville shopping center, near wendy’s and roccos pizza…there have to be more in the area…or, maybe at other vets as well…several vets in the area allow adoption notices to be posted…
If the cat sounds like he/she is a pet, have you tried knocking on a few doors in your area and asking if anybody has lost a cat or know of anybody who is missing a cat of that description?
Or maybe try Craigslist?
I got my kitty from - and currently volunteer with - P.A.L.S http://palspets.org/ - if I wasn’t at my pet limit at my apartment (between mine and the roommates pets) I’d offer to take her for you
Forgotten Cats may be another option that I can recommend (I know there’s a COTHer that fosters/volunteers with them but I can’t remember their name).
Thank you for your suggestions but believe me, I have done all your suggestions. I went on Pet finder and found all the local rescues that had phone numbers. Only two called back and said they were full of kittens right now. My dog/cat vet posted a Picture Flyer, other vets said to drop off the flyer and they’d post it. Don’t know if they did or not. My horse vet is asking people, my boarders’ vet is asking for someone to foster it. I found a feral cat rescue that will neuter it and give it it’s shots and have me release it again…h’mmm. I think it’s already neutered/spayed since there isn’t any equipment visible and with the feral toms in my area, if it’s a she, she would have kittens this spring. (I’ve had her since May, and no visible signs of recent nursing.) My horse vet gave the cat a rabies and distemper shot, and being a large animal kind of guy wouldn’t venture a guess as to the sex. Where I live is not your regular neighborhood to go knocking on doors about a lost cat…no neighbors are close. She was on her own for months before I got close to her to catch her, all through the winter, and I never saw any lost cat posters anywhere. I don’t like putting animals on CL. I put a stray on there a few years ago and I had really weird calls. I think I’ll prevail on the one person who said she’d take her after old cat’s demise and see if she can take her now.
I guess I had hoped for some rescue numbers that would allow a posting while I kept the cat here. I understand they are filled with kittens.
I am down in Pottstown and might be able to help foster her. I have 6 of my own cats and 3 dogs. Let me check with DH and see what we can come up with.
My cats are all indoor/outdoor cats since they learn to use the dog door. I do have the option of just locking a cat in a bedroom. That is where I start them so they aren’t overwhelmed. I then put up a baby gate so the dogs can’t visit but the cat has a safe place. They normally start cruising the house at night when everybody is sleeping. I never actually show the cats the dog door or the cat doors. They find them all on their own.
I need to have the cat tested for feline leukemia before I can expose him to my cats. But he could stay in the bedroom with no access to my cats until that is done or until he goes to his permanent home.
Let me run this by DH this evening. I know he will only be agreeable to this as long as it is thought to be a short term foster- as in a couple of months.
One of my 6 cats is technically available for adoption. I picked her up from my hairdresser’s parking lot as a stray. We have had her 1.5 years. I still would like to find her a home since she doesn’t really like other cats. She has gotten better about the dogs and actually likes the lab. So DH will be a bit gunshy about taking on a cat that might become #7. We don’t want to be the crazy cat people
Actually there are two local rescues that have allowed me to do courtesy listings on petfinder through their organization. One I was able to get the dog adopted due to that listing.
The other one is the hairdresser lot cat, Daisy. Never got one call on her.
I will dig up their info and get back to you on that.
Oh Sonnysmom, i’m not too far from you if you can help out kitty til the other woman can take her, I’d be forever in your debt. I’ll give you food and litter for her as she needs it and I’ll get her tested for feline luek. I’m just worried that the heat is going to be hard on her in the unventilated tack room. Meanwhile I’ll keep trying to find her a courtesy listing somewhere, and a forever home sooner so the dying kidney failure cat doesn’t have to go before his time so the other woman can take her. so please PM me if you think you can help! (I’ve haven’t been on-line this week for days as it was fill-the-barn-with hay time so I didn’t see Sonnysmom’s post before this)
You may mention to the friend with the dying cat that sometimes a new friend gives an old pet a new lease on life. We had an ancient cat with thyroid problems, diabetes and a few other problems who lived an extra year when the new kitten arrived. He seemed to feel better and he and the youngster became best buddies.
Kitty’s possible future owner who has the kidney failuring cat is concerned about bringing this cat into her house since she had a problem with losing three sibling kittens she rescued this past spring to what her vet suggested might have been FIP. Now I am not a super knowledgeable cat disease person so I have gathered that this often is passed from mom to kittens so her kittens could have come with it, or her older cat has the virus/carrier and it spread to the kittens. Virus is difficult to test for, but it can only live a few weeks without a cat so she doesn’t want to chance bringing home another cat and go through that heartbreak again.
This woman is a co worker of my daughter and DD has told her it was getting critical with the heat and she said what I said I’d do, and that is support Kitty’s fostering til the old one passes. I’m hoping she’ll take her sooner and lock her in one of her bedrooms at her house, in AC, and with someone to love her (or him?).
If you are on Facebook go to spots and stripes Bengal cat rescue. She is real nice and will allow you to post on her page. Even though she is in S Fl. there are people from all over on her page.
Wish I could be more help!
Well, Kitty is going to a new home tonight. I found out kitty was a young adult (about two) neutered male when I took him to the vet to have feline leukemia/aids test. Negative there. Armed with nothing but positive info about him, my DD called the kidney failing cat owner who agreed to take him tonight. She fixed up her spare bedroom for him to live in while he adjusts? I guess she got him his own litter box, bed, scratching post and toys. I think for a cat who lived out on his own for 4 or 5 months this past winter, he’s going to be living large! Thank you all for your suggestions.
