Need Help Finding Oldenburg Mare's Breeder in Southern California

We have an approximately 12 year old unregistered Oldenburg mare, and I’m hoping to locate her breeder to get more information about her bloodlines and background. I thought some of the experienced breeders on the Forums might have some ideas about who the breeder might be.

The only information we got from our mare’s previous owner was that she had come from a prestigious Warmblood breeder in “the Valley,” (the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles), or it could possibly be an area of San Diego County called Valley Center. The mare was caught up in a divorce situation/settlement and was kept on the breeding farm until she was approximately 8 years old, unregistered and not broke to ride. (We had our vet look for a microchip and didn’t find one.)

She’s a very pretty, big-bodied, 16.3 hand bay with good conformation, some white socks, and a blaze. She would have been born in approximately 2001 or 2002.

Any clues, thoughts, ideas, or leads about where to go from here in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated! We would love to know more about her–someone obviously took great care in breeding her. Thanks for any help on this.

How do you know she is Oldenburg ? Branded ?

If she is branded, then she is registered ISR OldenburgNA and not GOV. GOV does not brand in north america. So if she is not branded, it is either that she is not registered or that she is GOV registered but then, she should have a microchip. No microchip and no branding means that it is unlikely that she was registered with one or the other registry. And if this is the case, then you cannot really tell if she is oldenburg or anything else. Do you have an idea of who is or might be her sire?

She has no brand and no microchip, so you’re right, we really can’t tell for sure what she is, but she does look like a warmblood.

I guess the main thing I’m asking is if anyone knows of any top Oldenburg breeders in the San Fernando Valley or Valley Center, CA that would have been around in 2001 or 2002? This breeder would also have sold some/all of their horses due to a divorce situation several years later.

I know it’s a long shot, but I wanted to at least try to see if anyone knows of any breeders that might fit the description.

well Heike was around in Valley Center in that time frame with Oldenburgs. But I think she just had stallions.

OMG! I think I know this story! Does she have a lump on a leg somewhere, and (if I remember right…) is she a little toed in in front? Not SUPER sound, and stops?

She is by Lester Patron out of a TB mare… I have the info in my email somewhere. I don’t even know where to start but to say it was a MESS is an understatement. The owner/breeder is in jail, and the ex husband’s dad had the horses at his little property in Chatsworth. The dad wanted to give them away because they had been sitting in stalls for months with no work (and the big lovely flaxen chestnut Wagenaar/Aram gelding was this close to foundering), but then once he started getting interest in them, the son (ex husband of the owner) decided he wanted about $15,000 for them. We’ve been worrying about them for a while. Glad it sounds like the mare landed softly

Feel free to email or PM me… I can put you in touch with people and I have emails from the stallion owner when we were trying to get info on the dam.

Here’s a pic… I realize now she doesn’t have a blaze and rather a large star and snip, but the story sounds too identical.

This is from the current owner of the sire of that mare…

Hi Shannon.

I believe the mare you are looking at was bred by Jennifer Zito out of a reg TB mare named Sable. She would be about 11 years old now. I do happen to know Sables current owner and she does have papers on Sable but I’m not sure if Jennifer Zito ever registered the Lester Patron mare. I did not own Lester at the time that Jennifer bred to him but I did see the resulting foal when she was about 2 years old and she was quite nice. Sables owner does have papers on her and I can possibly help you get her registered if she isn’t already. Where did you run across her? Let me know how it goes. I like to keep track of Lester’s offspring and I can probably put you in touch with the owner of the mares mother, Sable.

Best,

Shirin

Eeeeek! Jennifer Zito! That is a blast from the past. I can probably get info on the horse for you if you haven’t already figured out who the horse was. I can guarantee you she was not a “reputable breeder…” I don’t know of her breeding anything at all.

ETA: Mr. Justice is sitting by me and wanted to know why I was laughing out loud… I showed him your post. He says I should tell you that he’s sure you have the nicest horse that stolen money can buy

The stories sound way too similar do they not? I have lived in this area (just north of Calabasas, where Zito was) with horses my whole life and had never heard of her before I came across these two horses. Do you recognize the mare in the photo? I guess the guy had already rehomed one or two of her horses, and just this mare and a gelding named D’orf were left. He was a nice big hunter gelding but seriously overweight and probably about to founder if he hadn’t already. I’m trying to remember his show name… He was in his late teens, imported Dutch gelding. I felt really bad for these horses.

David Wilson owned Lester Patron before Shirin bought him. I think that Jennifer Zito may have bought a horse or two from David, maybe by Grand Canyon if not Lester. I’m visualizing her with a large chestnut with a fair amount of white. It may have been a stallion. Maybe that was the breeding program?

If we can come up with something concrete to ask him, I’d be happy to wander next door and ask David.

I got curious enough to look up Jennifer in USEF and the chestnut I remember is Grand Chancellor, which is the one David sold her.

The mare in the photo looks a bit like she could be related to Grand Canyon, in addition to or as opposed to Lester, if those are the only options.

This thread is so cool!! Can’t wait to hear from the OP. It still amazes me how wide-reaching COTH can be.

For those of you who don’t know Jennifer Zito was convicted of embezzling funds from her employer to pay for her horseback riding career. I have asked a friend for information on Sable, who she was bred to, and what they know about the resulting filly. The horses that she bought from Randy and Lisa were just lovely including Dorf. I’m devastated to hear that he ended up in such conditions. The last time I saw him he was showing Indio in 2004 so he is older now but deserves a much better retirement. Please let me know if he is still there, I would like to send a friend to go rescue him.

I just spoke with a friend, and Sable is who I thought she was. I did not know she’d been bred. Feel free to pm me, not sure what else you want to know

I know the mare. Her name is Roxie but I don’t know her breeding. Sadly, I only know WAY too much about the entire saga. I hope she is able to stay put with a new owner.

Yes, Roxie was this mare’s barn name! She was definitely Lester Patron/Sable. Grand Chancellor was rehomed before this guy decided to ask $15k each. We would have rescued D’orf too, but not for that price.

I asked a friend more “in the know” and this mare had gone to someone at Camelot to be used, but last she heard she’d been sent back because she was lame or stopping, can’t remember. She thought both this mare and D’orf were back sitting in the ex husband’s dad’s (or whomever!) backyard in Chatsworth.

I know I took a couple photos of D’orf that same day, wonder where they are…

I guess I even took a quick video of her…

Still haven’t heard from the OP…Is this the mare she currently has?

Unfortunately, it turns out that it’s not the same mare. Our mare has only 2 white socks, and a narrow blaze (or maybe it’s best to call it a star, stripe and snip–it’s really much more narrow than typical blaze), not a star and snip.

The stories do sound very similar. I got so excited thinking it might actually have been her–it would have been amazing! Thanks so much for your replies.

I have to say I’m disappointed! Do you have a photo you could share?
