Need help reading thoroughbred tatoo

I’m interested in knowing some of my horse’s history. I bought him this year out of a lesson program and don’t know much about his past. He has a lip tattoo but I’m having trouble reading it. My vet thinks it is “J3B813.” The 2 problems with that is the jockey club tattoo should only have one letter and he is supposedly 16 so the first letter should be an “E”.

Could anyone help me read his tattoo? I’ve uploaded several images to my google drive.

Thanks in advance!

Does he have any white anywhere? Can you post a picture of his face and legs if he does have white markings?

I can post pictures later this afternoon. He has a few small white spots on both front legs and his right hind. Outside heel of the right hind is white and he has 2 white spots on the front of his right hind touching the hoof.

Google Drive is updated with pictures of his white markings. He’s a (mostly) plain bay gelding.

I’ve also submitted an inquiry form to the jockey club for assistance.

Where is the cowlick on his face? Between his eyes, above the eyes, double or single, centered? There are a few possibilities but that right hind marking could be described a few ways. Need the cowlick info to help narrow it down.

I’d say between or slightly above and off to the left. Let me see if it shows in any pictures I have of him!

Might be this one:

Itsawardthing, G36031, Right hind: heel white. Cowlick slightly to left above eye level.

That horse ran on the east coast, though: http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse&refno=6905815&registry=T

What do you know about this horse’s history?

He was purchased in 2011 by a hunter/jumper barn in TN. Unsure of who he was purchased from at that time.

He certainly could have come from the east coast then! I think Itsawardthing could be a good match based on what I can see of the tattoo.

I agree it looks like 360 for the first part of the tattoo. I’m not seeing anything that looks like a direct match though. I would expect the description to include the mixed white patches on the front of the coronet and specify outside heel white. “Right hind: heel white” does not describe that leg accurately.

Cammie, I agree. Wasn’t sure how the jockey club records white markings but I assume at least the markings on his right hind would be accurately described! Hopefully they will be able to assist in identifying him. Fingers crossed!

Aren’t qh tattooed too? Any possibility he’s not a Tb?

Tinah, he’s not built like any quarter horse I’ve ever met. I can post a conformation shot to google drive.

for racing purposes, an appendix can be something ridiculous like 7/8 Tb and still get aqha papers. When the lifeguard of the gene pool is a for-profit company, there are some strange fish swimming in the water.

Still not sure about the outside heel not being specified, but this one is close:

Strap Notch- Tattoo B36813

Right hind: white on heel, extending on coronet on outside, white hairs on coronet in front. Cowlick slightly to left above eye level.

This is him! My trainer found his jockey club name and tattoo in a box of old documents she was looking through.

Does anyone know know if I can request a copy of his jockey club papers? Just would be nice to have

If you want actual registration papers, not easily. It will cost $175 and you need a notarized statement from the last person who had the papers, explaining how they were lost or destroyed. For a gelding who is no longer racing, there’s really no reason you need these.

Now if you just want a copy of his pedigree or race record, those things are easily found online for free. (use brisnet.com and equibase.com)

Strap Notch (lovingly known to me as “Strappy”) was my horse… I’m the Nashville/Franklin-area person who bought him from Mr. Rose… Strappy was my entire life and my best friend all throughout middle school and high school. Having to let him go when I went to college was the absolute saddest day of my life. I’ve been looking for him for the past several years — I can’t tell you how overjoyed I am to read of him and you. I see that your last post was over a year ago — I hope you are still on this forum, and will see my message. And I’m hoping we can get in touch directly. I am so anxious to talk to you and hear more about how he’s been doing. And I can tell you more about my time with him in the past. Please let me know how to reach you!!! Thanks, Katie
