Need help with a saddle pad

Hi, I’m hoping somebody can help me. I ride English, and have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to western tack. So, my dad has been getting fairly competitive lately in ranch sorting, team penning, and has just recently started team roping. He’s having a great time with it, and is planning to start rodeoing next year. What I want to do is make him a lightweight saddle blanket with his horse’s name embroidered on it for competing, but I don’t know what to use. He has a fairly think pad that he usually uses due to saddle fit, so obviously I want something thin and lightweight, that he can put over the normal pad when competing without interfering with fit. I know he won’t use a single-layer wool blanket with his pad, as it’s too thick, so I wasn’t sure where to start. Would something about the weight of an English baby pad work? I was thinking of ordering a racing saddle blanket that’s super light-weight and hopefully big enough. Any other ideas?

The western world has many “show pads” that are quite thin and normally used over the thicker underpad. I would think that the best thing for you to do is buy one of these pads, Maytex is a brand, and then do what you wish to embelish it. He then would still have his thicker pad for protection.

Any very thin pad like a cotton baby pad may move, bunch, fold, or flap. Not what you wany.
