Need help with legal case - Market Value of Arabian and Half Arabian/WB dressage horse - see more

As most of you know, I am an equine lawyer in Texas. I am also an equine appraiser. I have been asked to help determine the fair market value of a couple of horses. To do this, I need “comps” (comparable sales). I need ACTUAL sales prices for similar horses and finding this info is getting more difficult these days.

If you have bought or sold an Arabian and/or Half Arabian/Half WB dressage horse in the past year or so and are willing to provide the ACTUAL SALES PRICE, I would really appreciate it if you would email me at RPennington@EquineLawyer.net and provide me with the age, gender and summary of its show experience and the ACTUAL SALE PRICE and the state in which the sale was made.

I will completely protect your and the horse’s identity and not reveal the info to anyone. I just need good comps!

I know there are lots of other important variables that go into comps, but for this particular case, the above is all I need. Bloodlines are unimportant, as is show record in stuff like halter classes.

Thanks a million!

Sorry, Sonesta, I’m no help at all.

Just posting to say that I read the title of your post without noticing the author. I was going to advise the OP to contact a professional appraiser and say that they’d need to talk to a good lawyer if they didn’t have one already.

I was mentally composing my post when I opened the thread and saw that you were the author. I had a moment of serious cognitive dissonance …

I recovered quickly but it might take the cat a few minutes. She was sitting on my lap when I burst out laughing about my moment of confusion so now she’s at the other end of the couch, glaring at me.

Good luck!

I wonder if the Arabian Horse Association could be of help somehow.

You’re in the West so maybe the Kellogg Arabian Center of Cal Poly Pomona can help. They’ve apparently sold more than a handful recently. They’re a public entity, so you might be able to track down the prices with little drama.

OP. I can think of some pros you might contact. Do you want me to PM those names?

You’re in the West

I believe OP is in the Houston area which really is “western East Cost” the American West is considered to began west of the ninety-eight meridian

Ft Worth Ft Worth is often considered the gateway to the West because of a treaty was made under which the Native Americans were to remain to the west of a line traced passing through the future site of Fort Worth. The line marked “Where the West Begins” — giving Fort Worth its famous slogan.

No help with direct prices, but as someone who is in a somewhat related profession of assessing and appraising value[s] of niche things and has had to get creative, it might be worth combing the USDF breeds and messaging/contacting riders of half-Arab/Part-bred WBs to see if they’d be willing to share what the purchase price was.

There are a few Half-Arab/Dressage Arab FB groups too, I would check there as well.

From experience, I can say that it might be hard to even have a valid comp for a part-bred. There are half-bred Arabs that sell for meat price, and then those that sell for nearly six figures. It really depends on what the other half is. A half-bred Arab/QH won’t get much interest in the dressage world, but a Trakehner/Arab is in its own rights a WB and could command WB prices even as a yearling.

Possibly some equine insurance companies would be willing to share the range of values for which they insured newly purchased half-arabians within the last year? That would sort of back you into the sales prices.

That made my morning, Summer!

NaturallyHappy, I’m just about certain that the AHA would not release such info without the owner’s consent.

Schoolmaster, unfortunately that wouldn’t give the anything more than breed and price. I specifically need dressage horses.

My insurance form makes you declare discipline and use. I assumed that was pretty standard?!

Schoolmaster, yes, you put discipline, but not the levels and show records. There are a few other complications in this case that is making me reach out here and on other forums and social media. A standard appraisal approach is not going to be possible so I am broadening my scope a bit. This will NOT be a standard appraisal. I wish I could explain more, but ethics prevents it.

Oh yes…I wasn’t clear. I thought they may release the contact information of horses who recently changed hands for you to get in touch with.

I think they have the sport horse Arabian group, too.

I think you’re responding to me?

My company makes me list the horse’s discipline, level competed, and intended use.

I think some prior companies I’ve used asked for similar information.

Thanks.
While I’ve crossed the country many times at various latitudes and worked to understood the regional definitions, I’m always up for some US geography arcana.
Can’t wait to tell my friends in the College Station area that they live more than a degree east of the Fort Worth Rule of the West™ longitude. I suspect they’ll argue that being west of St. Louis is good enough for them. :cowboy_hat_face:

You might put your request out on Facebook. Arab groups, trainers groups, etc. A lot of folks on there would see it and have comps for you right away.
