Need ideas for Jumper/Eventing Stallion

I’ve got a 2009 Oldenburg mare that we will be breeding and I am looking for suggestions as she is a different type than what I have bred in the past… The mare is by Rex Grannus and out of a Holsteiner/TB mare (Liocalyon).

Looking for a suitable stallion who is known for throwing a good mind and offspring that are BRAVE. We are not looking to add too much more bone/substance; however, we aren’t looking to refine her much either. The horse will most likely go to the jumper and eventing ring as an adult. Registry is flexible and we are looking for fresh or frozen prospects (changed our minds).

Conformation shot (not the greatest photo, but the most up-to-date):

Here are videos of how she goes:

Thanks in advance for any feedback or suggestions!

If breeding for eventing, I’d match her with a Thoroughbred to add refinement and character. Sea Accounts and Artrageous come to mind, they have a fair number of offspring on the ground, good athletes with good brains. I haven’t seen what Baatesh has produced, but I like him (and his breeding) as well.

Where are you located?

Thanks for the suggestions! I really like Artrageous. I added an up-to-date picture of her that I snapped today under the original post–she is more refined as she has grown up.

We are located in Oklahoma

Guaranteed Gold would compliment and refine her

and also consider Arctic Blue, C Denaly or TwentyFour KT Gold

Good luck in your decision!

Thank you! Guaranteed Gold is a beauty. Does anyone have any warmblood suggestion? Not totally sure we want to refine her and would be interested to see warmbloods as well as TB options too.

Not sure who Silver Creek Sporthorses is still standing. They have a limited stallion roster now. But since they are in Broken Arrow, Okla, it might be worth contacting them to see.

I have a wonderful jumper that I got from them. He is by Cathalido, who would do everything you want. I know that Cathalido is no longer there. However, if you could locate him, I can very highly recommend him for what you want. Incredible brain, very refined, especially for a Holsteiner, and sires horses with a great jump.

I know they are offering a homebred named Validation. But he is overseas, so I am pretty sure they can only offer frozen. If I were into breeding, I would use him in a NY minute.

I agree with the others on looking at a full TB. Also suggest looking at trakehner stallions like Tatendrang or Holsteiner Lotus T who is out of a TB I believe

Another vote for the Tatendrang

A stallion I like very much is VDL Windsor H. He is by Indoctro out of an Ahorn mare, shows in the jumper ring with his AA owner, which I think speaks to his temperament.
I bred one of my A Fine Romance daughters to him to produce an eventer. I didn’t need to improve her jump, but I wanted a stallion who would not take anything away from her.
The resulting foal is wonderful, everything I hoped for and more. Refined, elegant, incredibly athletic and a fabulous mover.
VDL Windsor H is a 1/2 brother to the jumper/eventer stallion VDL Ulando H, and another winning GP jumper.
He has the conformation, pedigree, movement, jumping ability and temperament I was looking for.
His first foals are just reaching performance age, and they look very good.
He stands in Canada, and his semen was excellent.

He is definitely one to have a look at!

VDL Dakota offspring?

VDL Windsor looks like a nice prospect. Can’t seem to find any conformation shots out there though. Any ideas of what his offspring are doing? Tatendrang also looks like, but also didn’t see conformation shots.

We aren’t looking to refine the mare–just also not looking to add much more substance than she already has. For that reason, we will most likely try to stick with a warmblood stallion.

We have been taking a closer look at the Hyperion stallions. Does anyone have any information on VDL Dakota’s offspring? Or an opinion of a Hyperion stallion that would be a better match with this mare conformation wise/bloodline wise.

I would very much love to be educated on what this mare lacks in her lineage and where it can be improved.

There are LOTS of photos of Tate, including confo on his FB page and my website. Some are candids and some are posed. There are photos from birth on to current.

And all you have to do is email and ask. :).

Another vote for Artrageous. I have a colt of his that is almost 4 months old and so far he is 10 feet tall and bullet proof but hes also a big love

The Trakehner stallion Ehrentanz (by Hirtentanz) has just been approved ISR/ONA in addition to ATA… he’s a wonderful, multi-talented boy who has a heart of gold and a pocket pony character. He just qualified for the six year old young jumper championship finals, but he’s also talented in dressage and scored a 73%+ at first level this spring before shifting his showing focus to the jumpers. There’s lots of photos on his webpage (http://kdsporthorses.com/ehrentanz-kd/) including photos of him in the dressage ring, showjumping, and on the cross country course, as well as offspring photos.

Here is a trotting pic of VDL Windsor H from his FB page:

I really spent a lot of time thinking about who to breed my mare to (there is at least one thread about it) and this stallion ticked all the boxes for me.
This mare is a full sister to an Advanced event horse and winning Grand Prix jumper.
I could not be happier with the foal she produced with VDL Windsor H.

A friend of mine who is an UL eventer in the UK was over here when I was breeding to him, and she went to see him, rode him and LOVED him.
The semen was excellent, and the stud fee is very reasonable. With the exchange on the $ it is even more of a bargain.

Another stallion I love, but who is only available frozen is Diamant de Semilly. He was my first pick, but for a first foal, I wanted to use fresh.

Good luck in your search.
(disclaimer: other than breeding to this stallion myself, I have no connection to him or his owners.)

Well I see you really haven’t been offered too many warmblood suggestions, but perhaps if you tell us a bit more information such as, what would you like to improve? size? scope? power? temperament? does the mare have any flaws? What are the mare’s strengths? Also, what level of eventing or jumping do you aspire? How important is an amateur temperament? I’ve got my favorite personal warmblood jumper stallions, but I hesitate to offer them up without knowing more information about your goals and your mare.

You might look at Mighty Magik for her. I think she is a mare he could do well with. Perhaps someone on here can comment on the bravery component? Hesitant to say one way or the other that he would produce that.

I bred to Diabolo D’Esquelmes for the same purpose (ammy friendly jumper/eventer). Due May 2016. He’s a son of Chin Chin; good mind, fabulous jump. Great quality semen (fresh cooled) and a great stallion owner!

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I’ve got to go back through the list and try to narrow it down with the new suggestions. The mare is 16.3, with a lot of power. She’s got great suspension, scope, balance and a phenomenal temperament. Very happy with her size and bone, and would love to get a stallion who would not necessarily refine her, but don’t want to go much bulkier than her either. Shortening her up a tiny bit wouldn’t be a bad idea–though she does get a lot of power through her back and steps under nicely so it’s not an absolute requirement. We definitely do not want to go any shorter with the neck either. She is very sensible and smart; however, we would like to breed her to a stallion who is known for throwing brave. She can be overly careful and actually switched into eventing to begin with to get her to be brave/bold to spooky looking fences.

The goal is to produce an amateur friendly horse that can go Prelim eventing, upper level jumpers, and some dressage. Basically we would love to get something that is as sensible and scope as she is, but a touch braver/bolder for the eventing ring. We also would like to get a stallion that is conformationally similar to her (longer proportioned), has a longer neck, and powerful gaits.

Without launching into too many details–I am leasing her to a friend to breed while I finish up nursing school. My friend has been talking with the owner of the Hyperion stallions and is very comfortable with working with them. They have recommended 3 stallions–Obourg, Orlando, Vittorio. If anyone has any input on these stallions or suggestions for a different Hyperion Stallion, would also love to hear that.
