Barn names
His barn name should be whatever you relate to calling him, don’t force it.
Clifford
Tucker
I swear to g, my horse came to me, in a dream, the night I got him, and said “My name is George”. and so it was, it fit, he responded to it. And his prev name was so ridiculous. He was completely, a George.
That is about the best horse naming story I have heard yet.
George is such a good name, will remember it for next time.
Maybe the OP will be now listening in on her dreams, her horse may just also tell her.
This is how I named my son. Right after I found out I was pregnant I had a dream in which he said “I’m a boy, and my name is XX”. We held off on deciding until after he was born, but sure enough - XX felt right and that is who he is today. And even though it is a name with a common nickname and will even respond to it if someone else uses the nickname, he always uses his full name.
For geldings I have always liked names like Eli or Leo or Luke or Ben. I like George too!
You really need to have a good feeling for the name, though.
Gary.
It should probably have two syllables so when he’s bad you can really drag it out, like Heeennnn-rrryyy!
Isn’t that why we give kids middle names so they know when you use it they are in real trouble?!
My family likes the more uncommon men’s names for male pets. We’ve used:
Sam
Fritz
Monte
Cecil
Lowell
Earl
Eugene
Murray
I still think that if you just enough time around the unnamed animal, the right name will come. But of the suggestions here, I have to say I like Clifford.
I have a registered quarter horse gelding. 16 3 Hands - registered name is Hezza Parkin It. We call him Clifford. His show name for local stuff will be Clifford The Big Red Horse red
Clifford was my first choice. As a fan of the band Simply Red, I also like Mick (singer Mick Hucknall).
Wilson !!
For a big horse, how about go “opposite”, and call him:
Shrimp
Tiny_____
Little ____ (fill in the blank with an initial or name that you like. Little Joe, or Tiny D, etc)
But really, the name has to come from you. Doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of it, he’s your horse and it’s your relationship with him.
Check out baby naming sites. Or pull out a dictionary, or any book about something that interests you. Start making a list. Pick a name that appeals to you, and start using it. You’ll know pretty quickly if it’s suitable or not. If not, go back to your list and try again.
I had a bright chestnut once who came with the name Red (imaginative!). He had a wonderful temperament and deserved so much better. His coat had a beautiful metallic shine so I called him Copper.
Mr. PoPo’s horse was a big red horse. One day in a lesson, our trainer called him a big red tomato. And that became his name - Tomato. Show name was Heirloom. He was the best and we miss him so much.
D.H, for D.H Lawrence who wrote Lady Chatterley’s lover. My Mother says that it was passed around from kitchen to kitchen in the 1950’s in a brown paper bag. So, Brown Paper Wrapper (chestnut) = D.H.
I echo Blugal’s suggestion of Copper – it was the first thing I thought of when I read your thread title. Other ideas:
Flashfire
Jasper
Charlie (as in fox)
Rufus
Jamie or Fraser after the character Jamie Fraser in the Outlander books? He is a tall, handsome, red head.
