Need new helmet

Took a fall recently, need to replace my much loved Tipparary sportage. That helmet fit me well.
Any current suggestions.
Need 1. excellent fit, 2. as much ventilation as possible. I have difficulty w/ heat & plopping a black piece of non-breathing plastic on my heat doesn’t help much…

Fit is something you need to figure out for yourself.

yes, but any input on something that might have a similar fit & good ventilation will be appreciated. I need a starting point. Particularly on the ventilation.

They still make the Sportage… if you loved it and it fit well, why not just replace with the same thing?

Uvex makes a basic model that fits this. It’s my schooling helmet and it’s wonderful imo.

not out of the question, just wanted to see if there was anything MIPS that was ventilated too.

There are many and more that have come out this year.

So much so that I need to update my MIPS helmet guide like ASAP.

If you’re on Facebook, we have an information hub group for US MIPS helmets.

We have a LOT of info and reps for almost all the brands.

The ventilation question has come up many times and a quick search of the group topics would likely reveal MANY threads.

The Tipperary Sportage Hybrid fits like the original Tipperary Sportage and looks better (I had the Sportage original, and last year bought the hybrid version). It ranked in the top 5 for safety in the recent Virginia Tech equestrian helmet safety study, and outperformed many MIPS helmets. If you liked your Tipperary Sportage, you might want to just get another.

I also like the fit of the Tipp Sportage and got their Windsor MIPS helmet in the new year. It fits the same. Not as well-ventilated as the Sportage, but none of the MIPS helmets are.

I have never ridden in a Sportage, but live in TX and get overheated VERY easily. I moved from a GPA First Lady to the Windsor wide brim and have not noticed my head to be noticeably hotter. I love my Windsor - highly recommend!

Hi Em, not to hijack this thread but have you come across the Suomy helmets? Made by a high end Italian company that previously specialized in bicycle and moto helmets? A few top euro riders seen in them

That’s an interesting question.

Here’s a brand that had NO shortage of safety devices in their Cycling and Moto helmets… BUT in equestrian, NO MIPS.

They seem to be sticking to mainline Europe and other parts of “abroad.” I would guess this is because here there are at least some percentages of riders who can see that MIPS does nothing to harm you and can be helpful in falls. More than a non-MIPS equipped helmet anyway. Europe is a bit behind us on this and so they can still sell those hats for LOTS of money to the folks who care about looks first and safety second. (these are my own observation and thoughts)

I’d be more impressed by them if they ever ended up in a helmet study and we could see if the Suomy folks let their cycling/moto engineers help create helmets up to the standards for folks on wheels.

I would disagree with this. Plenty of helmets with MIPS do have good ventilation.

The Uvex Exxential II w/MIPS is one. The new Ovation MIPS, and the new Troxel MIPS.

Not to mention that dispite it’s lightly deceiving appearance, the Halo has a ring of ventilation all around the head.

It’s important to stay up on the new MIPS helmets coming out because they are ventilated.

BUT also important to remember for the uber safety conscious… you CANNOT get PAS015 certified with any big air vents.

To reiterate, I didn’t say the MIPS helmets don’t have good ventilation. I said none of them are as “well-ventilated as the Sportage”. I did assume that the BIG air vents probably compromised safety since none of the MIPS helmets’ vents are as large as some GPAs, Sportage, Ovation Protege are. My first MIPS was the Uvex Exxential, but it didn’t fit as well as the Sportage, which the OP was asking. After about 6 months, I switched to the Tipp Windsor.

I have this one. I’ve been pretty happy with it. And FWIW, I had been wearing Tipperary Sportages forever before trying the Uvex.
