Need Pedigree Opinions for Client

Hello

I am looking for a horse for an adv beg student of mind. He wants to do lower level eventing and dressage. Budget is somewhat low, so we are looking at rather green horses that will stay in training with myself and/or my working student. I was hoping to get some opinions on the following pedigrees mainly for temperament, but any other input would be wonderful.

Thanks!

A pedigree is only a piece of the picture - sometimes, it has very little to do with their temperament. While I can generally predict within the general vicinity where on the spectrum of “forgiving vs not” for horses, I usually look at how they interact with people to gauge their temperament before I look at their pedigree. Some stallions are known to stamp a more generous mindset – but it doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee when you’re looking at a horse in front of you.

All of these pedigrees would be perfectly fine doing LL jumping/dressage, provided the horse in question is sound. There are no lines in any of these pedigrees that concern me from an athleticism standpoint for LL pursuits.

I would buy the horse that most suits your rider’s goals right now, without you needing to install additional training. I have my own reservations about buying an advanced beginner an OTTB. Unless the horse is boarded with you, and being cared by you. Personally, I don’t mind riders who are novices to green horses getting OTTBs as long as they are in a program, but I think there’s a difference between novices-to-green horses, and “advanced beginners” – who usually do not have the experience to handle things, when things go south. And they can.

Off of pedigree alone I think I’d like Big Jersey Kid the most in terms of type as I like a lot of the horses in his pedigree, but someone ought to pick up that Laser Ladee horse for eventing, if she is sound – that is a pedigree for sport.

Echoing Beowulf, temperament is so variable. Sure, some lines have strong patterns, but I certainly would rather hedge my bets on the visible temperament of the horse in front of me than the paper.

But with that said, as a fun gamble, I would probably bet on Laser Ladee being the most ammy-friendly, quiet, and confident of the bunch. I’m sure I’m wrong.

Cowboy Cal and Sweet Return happen to be two sires I just adore. Cowboy Cal unfortunately landed in South Korea; Sweet Return is still active in Indiana I believe. Of course, me liking them has little bearing on whether or not the subject horses will be what your client is looking for!

No worries, whatever horse we find will be boarded with me and stay in training with me and my working student. I am very well aware of the worries behind an adv beginner getting an OTTB. All the OTTBs we are looking at (aside from Laser Ladee, which unfortunately I don’t think we are going to go for because she’s just too green, although WOWSERS is she NICE!) are well started into their new careers and have some show mileage.

Thank you!
